I don’t think they’d blame you for going to a permanent position. Did you commit to a certain time length for the contractor gig?

I would say secure the offer from the Fintech first, then talk to your FAANG boss and your friend that you had to do what was best for your family (which is more of a permanent employment). I’m sure they’ll understand.
... now that I have been working as contractor for a month at this FAANG, to try to get the fintech data engineer position back. I really don’t like the contractor thing, and it was a lot of salesmanship by my old coworker to get me here. How awful would it be of me to leave the FAANG company, after working here for three weeks? Side note- I don’t know if the fintech company would reopen offer, but apparently, they still haven’t filled it
I would speak with your boss at FAANG.
I already talked to boss. There have been conversations, but boss doesn’t know I’m considering actually leaving. As far as a “bad look” - not sure what that means. Im doing what’s best for my family, bad look to whom? I’m fine with it because I know what happened. Our mutual contacts? Nah man. I don’t see that being a thing. So basically, I’m just worried how stressed da boss will get. And I’m not worried because I’m worried about my career - it’s just because i don’t want to be mean. But can’t boss can just shift the schedule 45 days? I mean it’s FAANG, it’s a good rate, boss will find someone else. Work is not that hard. I can have the better job, which I would have taken in the first place if everyone was completely honest and not crafting their salesmanship skills.

I'd consider what this would do to your reputation with your friend. I doubt they'll ever extend you an offer again if you take off without at least giving the position a chance. Bring up your concerns with the role, see if you can get better work without leaving.
If you do decide to quit, just don't list the contractor job on your resume and you should be good. The contract company might blacklist you (depends both on your friend and on HR policy), but there are plenty of other potential employers out there. FANG are just four/five well known stocks, many other places pay well too.
It will definitely hurt the friendship. I would love it if I could get away with not hurting it. But I have to do what’s best for my family too
