So I heard the move used to be if you don't get the promotion from PwC after 2 years you try and go to another big 4 and get senior. Now I'm assuming it's a little more difficult or impossible? Is there a hiring freeze across the board?

That hasn’t been the move from what I’ve seen. I started in 2016, and so far most people get promoted after 3 years. Getting promoted after 2 is still new, and not everyone gets early promoted.
I have a friend in industry who recently got hired at EY in tax as a senior! I was so surprised. But sounds like some big4 are still hiring.

like

There are still a lot of hiring freezes but no that is not the move. Hardly anyone gets promoted after 2 years at pwc. I’m talking 1-2 per office. If you came looking to me for a senior job I would think you were full of yourself.

like

EY1 the fact that early promo is an option motivates me to push myself to get it. The competitive culture makes me a better professional. If it was an automatic X to senior and X manager it incentivizes coasting. Why bother making an effort if you can’t get promoted early.

This is out of curiosity solely - I am assuming that it takes 3 years as a senior to make manager at PWC, which would be 6 years in total in contrast with 5 for other big 4.
I personally wouldn’t consider wanting to make the move unreasonable - you probably have the same experience as any other A2 getting promoted, but clearly most people here don’t agree.

like

6 is if you don’t get early either time. More and more people getting 2 year to senior, I don’t often see 2 year to manager. I have never heard of anyone getting 4 years from start to manager that was not an experience hire (ny asset mgmt audit)

Ive seen people who join from PwC as staff around february/March and then get promoted around September. Also, firms are still hiring - one of my peers was laid off but he is doing final interviews with another big 4

like

Do you know what level and location? I’m trying to apply to big 4, but was under the assumption that there was a hiring freeze

That is certainly not the move lol

like

Is PwC 3 years until senior but then 2 more years after that until manager? Seems that the other big 4s are 2 years then 3 years.

like

Yeah you spend 3 years in either as an associate or senior but it’s usually 5 to manager. Can be done in 4 but difficult.

like

That’s also not a good move in general. If you’re trying to stay in public accounting through manager+ then being an experienced hire really does put you at a disadvantage compared to someone home-grown.

It all comes down to how good you are at your job.

Higher offers at 27-28 with more fixed pay is from contract and hire/fire type companies. Mostly indirect hiring instead of direct employment with the final employer, means higher pay with lower jon security - we get little more pay, companies get the option to let go with ease later!

My firm typically does insurance defense, but we take plaintiffs cases here and there. Is it typical that work done by associates on contingency cases isn’t counted toward their billable hour requirements unless and until we receive our fee on the case? This is my first experience with this, but it’s hard for me to reach my hours as is, without spending time on non billable cases like this with no assurance that I’ll see billable credit at the end.
