I have a friend who started on the agency side at a shop where I was freelancing. She bounced to a low level brand side gig, made the most of it. At that point, I got hired full time by that agency. She then bounced back to the same agency and we worked together for four years. Then she then got hired away by our biggest client. And when I left the agency, she pulled me in as a consultant. Now she has moved up to the SVP biz dev level. So the lesson I learned is, stay in touch with your coworkers and clients because the future is full of possibilities. Ask: who do I know on the corporate side?
It could be that they put their misplaced faith in those god-awful ATS programs and you’re automatically being rejected sight unseen.
Be sure your resume is “ATS friendly.”
I used it a while ago and forget which one I used.
I recommend starting a new thread simply asking the hive if they have a reco’d ATS checker program they like for resumes.
I also spent 10 years in an account services role at a creative agency and just made the switch to the brand side.
I found an integrated marketing role that’s basically what I did as an account sup, but in-house. I oversee campaigns from briefing through completion and am the main liaison between the brand and external partners. The similarities between the job description and my resume were so similar, it was eerie. Even though a lot of companies value in-house experience, there are definitely companies who think agency experience is invaluable and are looking for that.
Like everyone says, the job market is trash. I must’ve applied to over 100 jobs and only 7 companies reached back out to me. I even received rejections from roles I was directly referred for. It’s definitely a numbers game, so don’t lose hope. I started applying back in August of last year and didn’t receive an offer until February.
If you find any roles that are of interest, I would look up their Marketing team on LinkedIn and see if any of them have agency experience. Agency veterans are more likely to help out since they know what it’s like to be in your shoes 😉
Also, reach out to everyone you know (kidding, but not really) and let them know you’re looking for a new role and the type of role you’re looking for. One of my strongest job leads came from an intern I used to manage a few years back.
