I used to be a workout at night kind of guy. My office had a pretty nice gym that we could use for free and I would hit weights or cardio for 90 mins or so every Monday through Thursday with a more recreational exercise on the weekend, like hiking or bike riding. The routine of going after work made it easier to stay consistent.
That all went out the window with COVID and WFH. I went through a pretty bad phase last year where I'd work our sporadically at home, but there was no consistency.
Around October of last year I did not like how I felt or how I looked. My resting heart rate had gone up by almost 10bpm.
So I made what felt like a radical change (but actually isn't) and is the basis of the advice I offer you:
I now work out M-F in the morning, before I do anything with my day. I do it under the philosophy of PAY YOURSELF FIRST. My morning workouts are nothing like the 90 min sessions I would do at the office gym, but the 30-40 mins I pay myself really add up.
The point is to be consistent. If you can only work out for 15 mins in the morning, then work out for 15 mins in the morning. Get out of the mindset that a workout needs to be long to be "worth it".
A pleasant side effect to working out in the morning is that it's easier to choose more responsible meals during the day. I don't want to undo the hard work I put in that morning after all.
TL:DR - Work out in the morning consistently, even if you can only spare 15 minutes.
Great advice!! Thank you! I’m also a workout at night girl. I’ll give the short morning workouts a try.
Also congrats to you for making the change. 😊

Noom will get your diet on track and that’s the most important part. Additionally, look to increase your NEAT (non-exercise activity). This is energy burned from everything you do outside of exercise. If you have a fitness tracker like an Apple Watch you can probably see that your non exercise activity and steps dramatically decreased since working from home if you were more active before and walking around the office etc. Mine went from 20,000 steps daily to as low as 1,500. That impacted my weight more than anything else because my diet didn’t really change. Now I make a point to move around more. Things like putting the basket of laundry in one room and folding each article of clothing in a different room. This means I’m walking back and forth more often than I would be if I was sitting on the couch folding. I also take an hour walk with my husband daily. It’s technically exercise but I don’t really count it as exercise because the goal isn’t to get my heart rate high or anything, again just to move around.
My weight returned to normal with those changes alone and I’ve since added a fitness class. I’m not the type who needs to spend hours busting butt at the gym when I can get results from far less lol.
Yes!! I love my Fitbit. I used to walk to the metro to go to work every day, do a HIIT class before work, and was just a lot more active. Now my steps are far less than they used to be, and my formerly fast metabolism is slowing down. Thanks for the advice!

I’ve started intermittent fasting. With a small chance of return to office near the end of this year, I wanted to start decreasing my body fat %.
I’ve been doing intermittent fasting for a couple years and have lost 120 pounds. I actually do OMAD (one meal a day for those that don’t know) and love it!
I don’t follow any diet and eat whatever I want for my meal, I just make sure to get a really good walk in every day and drink a lot of water.

I just got a puppy and it’s one flight of stairs to take him outside. I’ve never moved more in my life!!
Jokes aside, weight loss is mostly diet based, so joining Noom is great! I have a friends who love it.
Start weightlifting. Super fun and builds muscle. Builds confidence, too!
Also take it easy on cutting your diet. It might be fun to see quick results but it is super hard to sustain. Cut at a slow rate and your loss will be way more sustainable.
I’ll also say that demonizing foods as good/bad is really unhealthy and can fuck up your relationship with food + your body real quick. Be careful!
BMI 24.2 is still good 🙂 I did not like noom, but have been doing keto since Oct and lost close to 20 lbs
I signed up for Factor meals instead since keeping my diet on track is one thing, but the hassle and time of cooking is another. Abs are made in the kitchen, so as long as I stay out of mine I should be good.

I signed up to do a triathlon with my very fit brother. Either i get in shape or i drown on the first leg. It's been good motivation!

Thanks! Other than the fact that teaching myself to swim has gone much slower than expected, it's been fun! Good way to reconnect with my bro
3 rules if you can follow them, they are not easy.
1. only eat between 10am and 6pm. You can drink as much water you want anytime.
2. cut out bad carbs, and reduce consumption of carbs overall. Good carb - potatoes, wholegrain rice, quinoa, etc. you get the point.
3. Cut as much sugar and sugary drinks as you can.

I just like EY2's advice because they said potatoes are a good carb.
I'm trying to lose 25 lbs. Just signed up for a local meal prep service last week, it's been awesome so far.
I realized myself that if I have to make my meals, 1) I will not and will waste ingredients, and 2) I'll end up buying fast food and snacking. I also have never been able to commit to Sunday meal prep myself. I make it, eat it for a day, then trash the rest.
I found a local market that makes meal prep servings, and have been buying 5 portions per week since last week. It's crazy how not sweet the portions are and also how satisfied I am, even though it's not a ton of food.
Diet is 80% of weight loss, and for me I've decided to just be really honest with myself about my lifestyle. I know it's not the cheapest to buy premade meals in bulk, but it's worth it to me to not waste food and to eat healthier during the week. Weight Watchers, calorie counting, and gym have not been effective for me. So far calorie counting plus premade meal prep has been a good solution!
If anyone is in SoCal and is interested, PM me and I'll share the place I'm using.
I feel you on this. I’ve never heard of so many of my friends hiring nutritionists until the last couple of months as we stepped back on the scales. I’ve also been forcing myself to bike somewhere to get breakfast in the morning rather than ordering from a place downstairs.
I used to be a gym goer for 1-2 hours M-F pre pandemic. Since lockdown, I’ve really become a fan of the fitness apps with classes. I personally like the Peloton app (don’t have the bike), bc there are Pilates, barre, strength, HIIT, and yoga classes that are anywhere from 10-45 minutes based on how much time i actually have. I like all the options, and I’m sure there are tons of other apps/programs with great classes.

Give up soda and as many carbs as possible. Also cut back on empty calories like booze.
And until you get settled in your new schedule of working out don't implement all changes at once, you will likely fail (I would). Don't work out 5-6 days a week right off the bat, start with 3, maybe the week or two after starry incorporating healthier meals on your rest days, eventfully it'll become a lifestyle
