Bain & Company Is it truly easier to get in a smaller MBB office?
Have heard a lot for different opinions on these. The logic is that it’s easier because there is a lot of supply in cities like NY, Chicago and SF, but the counter argument is that the offices with less supply are also way smaller and have a lot less demand.

Very tough decision - I lateraled as a PL and while I think BCG is a great place, if you join below manager you have to be fully prepared to be an all star analyst all over again. You will be doing all the grunt work, analysis, etc. and need to check your ego at the door. Even PLs spend time at the analyst level when they start for onboarding and I saw people who didn’t fully embrace the more junior role fail to get their footing
No qualms checking my ego at the door and building the right toolkit.
Thanks for the perspective :)
I’d take MBB for future growth both in firm and exit ops. Comp hit won’t be too substantial but will quickly yield a better outcome.
Seconded. It may not even be a hit with bonuses!
It can be a hidden blessing to not lateral as an M…probably one of the toughest learning curves at MBB. I made that drop from C to level 1 when i joined BCG and honesty I would say it was worth it two years out.
Same, no regrets, needed the runway
You’re a M1 not in EYP making 200k? How’d you do that? Most SMs start under 200k.
Tech most likely. Friend is an M1, TC is $192k in the tech transformation practice.
B3 - you do not make “well over” 200k as C1. Top box is 215k or so even with the new salary increase…
Most likely a C1 makes 200k TC.
Source: I am a C1!
50 bonus? Where?? Top box bonus for C1 is 25%. New base is175k. Literally max bonus for top performance is 43k. And that is not taking into account that the increase was effective in October so the bonus will be based on prorated base pay.
That is definitely not “welll over 200”
100% would do it.
I lateraled from EYP. Very similar situation as yours.
The work is so much more interesting and I have learned more in the last 6 months than I did in 1.5 years at EYP.
Bain is a bit more intense, because it has a culture of frequent and intentional feedback. In previous firms, I received a lot of “you’re doing great, just keep it up” comments during feedback sessions. I’m getting actual guidance and actionable feedback to work on at Bain, so I know it is the best place for me in my career.
That being said, getting feedback can be tough, and can cause you to fear that you’re inadequate or that you aren’t “on-track”. But in reality, I was on track and these were just normal development areas for my tenure. Basically, the “fear of the unknown” was far greater than the actual fear of being “fired”.
You will also make well over 200k TC as C1
True. With the recent comp increases, I think salary should be comparable at C2 and TC will be higher in first year with signing bonus + higher bonuses in general
MBB obviously but you know I'm biased.
One thing to lookout for: accelerated promo is never guaranteed or sometimes even warranted.
Source: I joined at quite late as a C and appreciated the full C tenure that made me ready for the next steps. Fast forwards 4 years and I'm a happy Principal now.
I went from M at ACN to Asc here - no regrets. Trajectory, both comp and career, are much faster here and it’s given me a much better platform for growth than if I lateraled at EM.
I would take MBB if I were you. However, WLB is a con I would add to your list
MBB for sure. 1-2 years doesn’t matter in the long run, however, MBB brand will
I made this jump 6 months ago and it’s totally worth it.
