Tax LLM admissions criteria: hi everybody, I am a rising 3L thinking of applying to Tax LLM programs. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find much online about what makes one a strong applicant. Does anybody know where I could find that type of info? For reference, I got an A in Federal Income Tax and an A+ in Corporate Taxation. I am also an RA for a tax professor.

I’m not aware of an LLM issuing criteria like that, like how many law schools show median LSAT/GPA. It’s all of the usual suspects though: General positive academic performance, good grades in tax classes, being an TA/RA in tax, journal experience, and generally showing interest in the field are all positive things, none of which are a hard requirement except interest in tax. It sounds like you’re on a good track, so send out applications to the top programs and you’re likely golden.

Will do! Thanks again!

You will be in very good shape anywhere. It sounds as if Georgetown will be a good fit.

Hi attorney 1,

Appreciate the reply!

What school do you go to and what is your general GPA?

No problem.

I had a very similar (probably slightly better, but not materially) background 10+ years ago and ended up with a full ride at Georgetown plus an easy job (all in cost including living of about $15k) v NYU at 75% of sticker (would have been $60k or so including living expenses at the time).

I went the GT route but had no interest in being in NY long term and was OK if that meant going the big4 route. It has worked pretty well (or at least I’m happy with it) - did in fact go big4 and now in house doing planning and transactional work.

That doesn’t mean a decision to go to NYU is wrong (I probably would have gone if GT only offered half), but you very may be in a choice that not too many people have where the costs are very different so it’s worth thinking about.

Feel free to DM me if you’d like to anything more specific.

What’s your overall reason for going straight into the LLM? Personally, and maybe I’m biased but I think the LLM can wait, unless there is some very specific reason. You’ll get more out of the LLM if you go back to it in a few years and have some tax experience first. Again just my opinion. You have all of the skills you need after law school to go into tax and be successful. Was your undergrad business related?

That is true in the abstract. That’s not the advantage though. It’s coming in with the knowledge to be able to perform above peers. It’s then up to the individual to execute.

The comp premium is real and was consistent over the decade I was in big4 - it was consistently 20-25% for a LLM over JD.

We’re you per chance Deloitte? I have anecdotally heard they are an outlier and don’t really value LLMs. That was also consistent with GT offers - Deloitte was consistently the lowest by geo/specialty.
