I don’t think CDs have to be one or the other. They should be able to keep things open if there’s time for you to explore. If the timeline is crunched or the client is difficult I would greatly prefer a CD that knows what they want so we can move efficiently.
I think when people complain about the “just have fun” CD it’s because they’re just incapable of giving direct and actionable feedback which leads to people working late. It’s a skill issue.

Absolutely. I wrote that in the post that these are on two extremes.
But thinking about now, when it happens they are both. The CD who don’t give proper directions earlier will have to micromanage later.
I do hate too specific directions more than I hate vague ones, tho. CDs should be able to recognize and inspire their team own solutions instead of treating them like extra arms. Even to jrs.
Specially jrs actually. I think jrs should be able to fail without consequences.
Tbh your honesty is refreshingly insipid
That explains a lot why you are at GUT.

If you don't have a boss that pushes you out of your comfort zone, you are not getting better so you had better have been born awesome or you should prepare for a short career.
If you have a good CD, the way they give direction will be more about you than it is about them. If I think you need me to give you “marching orders” so you can successfully complete the work, I’m going to do that. If I trust you, you’ll get to have fun.

I’ve seen ECDs/CDs doing that with everyone in the team some places so clearly not about one person that couldn’t deliver.
Micromanagers CDs are real. CDs that got promoted or hired without leadership experience is also very common so unfortunately vague directions or imposition of their way happens.
I know what you are saying, I’m a CD too (not at gut, I’m freelancing) What prompted this post was actually me observing another CD giving someone very strict directions that were arbitrary in my opinion.
Weird flex.
