Why? I like PTO.
I’m single but I have a lot of friends and family.
Some of my friends work with me at my company(and on my project). They come over and we smoke weed while we’re in meetings and laugh and make jokes. Work from home is basically PTO

Unlimited PTO is unlimited work-less money
Pssssh. I need time off. Some people like to visit family and go on nice vacations that require a passport.
There are people who have negotiated an extra 5 or more days of PTO because it was that important to them. It’s about priorities.
And WFH/remote doesn’t make PTO any less valuable either.
So either you are a staycation kind of person or you travel and work. The former is boring and the latter doesn’t always work.
I get the digital nomad life. One day I hope to be that myself. However, as it is now, having to work for a US client while I’m in Greece is going to screw any fun given the time zone difference.
I don’t work on vacations. Period.
PTO payout > number of PTO days for me

Booz, fairly sure some states like CA & CO do require employers payout accrued leave on termination.
There are also some laws preventing things like forfeiture of accrued time.
Not going to verify the map below but for some idea of the common actors
Couldnt disagree more. Old company I was constantly harassed by work while on PTO. Now I take all my vacation without packing my laptop or work phone, and take the occasional mental health day as sick time.
Literally wouldn’t go back for $150k additional comp

Getting paid out $10k of unused PTO in a few weeks so I’d disagree.
I’m going to an “unlimited PTO” spot but only cuz they doubled my TC
Yeah, no. I’m on unlimited PTO and wouldn’t change it. And yes, my TC is also great (I consider myself overpaid actually). I’m also one of those people that actually take the time. It’s August and I’m north of 5 weeks. No problem from either side. I don’t want to be connected all the time. Just finished a week in Alaska. It was nice not worrying about client calls. Could I have done them there? Sure. But I would have missed out on a few things. Whatever floats your boat, works.
And that’s why you’re forfeiting 3 weeks of PTO, let this be a lesson to you. For me it’s rare to even have a week accrued

My last PTO payout was ~$17,000
I recently left a job in CA and still have a large balance of accrued hours. A couple years ago, I was promoted and became eligible for unlimited PTO. When you transition to unlimited, they stipulate to reduce your hours in the system as you go, but I never took enough time off to do that. Now I’m getting push-back on the pay-out because of my unlimited PTO status at the time of resignation, even though they do acknowledge the balance is still there.
