I’m enjoying it. 😉 I am really trying not to make people’s lives miserable. I operate from the mindset that the more my people are supported, recognized and trained, and the happier they are, the less work I have to do on the things that make me miserable, and more on the things I like doing. Win/win
NYC and HCP Pharma....
It’s b/c agencies no longer give us the experienced bodies we need. Instead they hire an army of juniors and mid-level which forces us to do the majority of the the real thinking / work ourselves at night since we’re in back-to-back meetings all day.
Give us 4 or 5 quality senior level teams instead of 8 inexperienced teams and the work + client relationships will be better for it. Agencies have zero long game anymore. They merely hire cheap band aids
This is true.
Generally speaking, ECD is just about the most hated position in the agency. Enough power to make people’s lives miserable, but not quite enough to be the final decision maker.
If you’re not at the top, you’re in the middle.
No so sure. ECD’s make enough to make any miserable person happy.
Why is ACD a terrible role?
ACDs are supposed to be “CDs in training”, meaning less accountability and more room to get involved in politics, processes, network - or owners, if independent - goals. It might not be a reality, but that’s the goal of this position.
ECDs have the CCO above them, so the very very final decision shouldn’t be on them.
Yes, both positions are crushed between work and management, but they’re also in a sweet spot where accountability is floaty.
Most of my ACD roles have still included a lot of creation. Primarily for the reason the initial post pointed out since the teams under me have mostly been junior and need a lot of guidance. But I still try and give designers and writers ownership of their work and mentor them to increase their experience.
My personal opinion is ACDs should be guiding teams and extremely strategic, but unfortunately the current agency models often put us more in the weeds than the role historically required.
I love all the opinions and matter of fact thoughts from people not in those roles. 😂
Perceptions that other people have of what the job might be is valuable to see....
IMO, Being an ACD was one of the hardest roles I’ve had. You’re expected to be in between: running pitches and Concepting for them and running brands and managing people. Depending on the size of the agency, ACDs are the hustlers. (At least that’s what I was when I was one). You become more managerial when you hit CD and GCD and may do less of the actual work. But you still have a lot of responsibilities
CD4, agree. It’s mentally and physically exhausting, but love it. If you’re lucky, you get to do the work/craft it aaaand lead. Best of both worlds.
What do you do that high up?
That’s nonsense. 1st ACD is bullshit. 2nd ECD can be very different roles depending on the agency. Some agencies ECD is the biggest creative title. sometimes ECD and GCD is the same thing. It really depends.
