It depends on how much debt we’re talking about and how much joy writing brings. If the long-term payoff is happiness and fulfillment, it might be worth taking the financial hit for a while.
It's a calculated risk. I have nothing against anyone trying to follow a passion, but these are the potential drawbacks to walking away from an established career. I can't tell someone whether they should or whether they shouldn't, especially a complete stranger. But there's a lot to consider, especially if you're supporting a family. Your stage and position in life should be key factors in whatever decision you make.
Are you talking in terms of focus, Kansas? Yeah, that makes sense, especially with the guy in the article. It seemed like he was making moves you'd make if you were 20 with no degree just starting out as opposed to someone with a decent paying and relatively stable career. If it were me, I'd hang on to the teaching gig while establishing something more permanent to transition into. Any move like this is a risk, but it's not a bad idea to hedge your bet when you stand to lose a lot.
Thank you so much for sharing your story. I recently left my previous teaching job and found myself apply for teaching jobs at different locations hoping for better pay for the amount of work that I do. I am learning new skills and applying for jobs that are remote and hoping to land something that gives me the benefits I need to survive and the time I would like to pursue my other passions. I pray all works out for you.
Well, teaching is really good if you can survive it all the way to max pension. Most of us would not be able to save enough on 401k type stuff. My teacher pension is like having 2 million dollars in the bank at this point, and maybe closer to 2.5 when I retire. He was lucky he had good students.
Wow! Good for you California, mine is worth at 500,000 max after 35 years of teaching:(
