Got my exit offer just in time for the new year 🥳🍾
$210/hr on 1099 in NE? 12 YOE... Take or stay?

It sounds like you are excited about it. All the cons are going to be present in nearly all exit opps (especially in tech), save your vertical preference.
Curious - I would imagine a Y3 post-mba, a 320k TC is at best par with what you currently make and possibly less - no?
It’s a slight increase to where I am now, but would pass it pretty significantly within a year if I stayed
I would take it; downside is small.
Can always boomerang if you don’t like it, considering you’re leaving in good standing.
Pros:
- The level is great for my experience - I've seen lots of folks with my level of experience going to a level down
- WLB - I've had a tough stretch at MBB and am ready for a life again
- I'm happy with the comp package
- This is the type of role that I'd probably target in 1-2 years if I stayed in consulting
- The tech jobs market has been slowing down, so future job searching will only get harder
Cons:
- Much slower salary progression post consulting
- Not sure what career path/progression will look like after this role - though the role is pretty broad so I can spin in a lot of ways
- I genuinely like the project variety in consulting, and I'd be giving that up
- Weak preference, but it's not the product vertical that I'm most interested in (e.g. consumer products vs. SaaS)
THIS👆🏽
Do it. Jumped from McK to G six months ago, similarly for just a modest TC bump (actually a slight decline in base) and have been worlds happier for it.
3 YOE in consulting, M&C3 - would you be willing to provide a referral if I see a similar role?
If you eventually want to leave mbb for big tech, this is a great exit. You may transfer from saas to consumer products easily internally. GTM/strategy/BizOps role seems to be very broad. What exactly will you do?
That’s a good point. I’ve heard transfers are fairly easy. And it’s closest to an internal strategy role
If you have 5 offers, it means that you really wanted to leave to actually interview this much 😂.
I’d trust that instinct and go! If you don’t like, you can come back
Your first CON on slower growth is not really true.
In MBB it's up or out so you only see ppl that went up -- survivorship bias.
In FANG there's no up or out so it seems slower growth because some people are choosing WLB and not moving up. There are many examples of ppl who have higher and faster comp growth in tech than MBB, the benefit is you have more agency in choosing how fast you want to grow.
I've seen colleagues go from 300k to 800k in 3yrs, one go from 450k -1.5 in 4yrs. Also others staying L6 for 5 yrs. I've been promoted twice in the last 2 years which most likely wouldn't have happened at MBB. I know of couple ppl who went from new grad to director before 30 (that's 150k to >1M in <7yrs) - that would be analyst to Partner at Mck by 30.
So this con is actually more of a benefit where you can choose your speed. It's unrealistic to expect better wlb AND faster progression. But you can choose similar wlb for similar (if not faster) progression.
Your comment is totally fair. In MBB it feels like if you can survive you eventually will be partner. Where as PM I know of many stuck in the level before director due to factors outside their control (org direction change, lack of scope, market condition changes on their product, etc). The good and bad about PM is you have way more accountability and ways to measure your success (or lack there of)
I work at Microsoft FWIW. This is an incredible exit. Take it.
Hi Consultant 1, May I know how L65 stands for Microsoft strategy role? Is this equivalent to L7 on Amazon? Or more as a L6?
I went to a mid-Tech company (e.g. Twilio, Salesforce, Adobe) for 320K TC 3 yrs post MBA (40K annual equity) and it was the best offer I received (other than late stage startups which were heavier on risky options)
I would say take it, know that comp growth will not be the same but there’s other ways to make money and grow than the ladder that consulting puts you on

Made a similar move and don’t regret it. Can always go back to consulting. OP what company is this?
Pretty good comp for G mcol
Make the leap and take me with you
Take it! You sound excited and that's a very solid offer for MCOL. Also, if you haven't counted - you should take retainer equity into account as well. Most big techs provide some retainer in Q1 each year. I think for Meta L6, it could be up to $150K (which vests over 4 years) based on n=1 data point from my friend who joined meta as L6 earlier this year in SF. You get the retainer each year, so by year 4 your total comp would be close to 470K (assuming no stock appreciation/depreciation and no base salary growth - which are not the best assumptions, but you get what I'm trying to calculate). Also, negotiate hard if you're still having the conversation with them - how much is the signing bonus you're getting?
What’s your total YOE? 320k for a 1Y EM isn’t a bad offer, but I’ve seen better.
Yeah, agree that MCOL is a driver here. This is the best comp of the 5 offers I received through my process.
Take it. No brainer. Consulting will always be here
Coming from similar experience (2 years MBB and now at tech in similar level), I would 100% jump!

I have a similar background and am in a similar role. Even if it's not 100% what you want to do just take it, you can always move around internally within the organization. At least within SAP lots of people move around once every couple of years.

Pull the trigger. Boomerang is easy, and with actual working experience in big tech, your value prop as a consultant only goes up. Even if you’re only there for 2 years, that’ll make it easier to sell work when you boomerang.

It sounds like the only core reason you're leaving is wlb. Every other pro seems a little opportunistic by comparison.
Do you care about wlb or money more? If wlb, take the offer. If money, stay in consulting longer.
What kind of company is this?
