Thinking about switching my 401k from a fidelity target fund to a S&P one. How does this actually work? Does it just contribute to the new fund on an ongoing basis or does it also sell the original and reinvest in the new? Are there any tax implications? TIA

No tax implications in a 401k. You can do either. You can sell what you have and buy something else or you can keep what you have and have new contributions go to something else

like

We have 3 options and can pick:
- future contributions only
- past and future contributions
- quarterly rebalancing across funds to our selection for last and future contributions (e.g., fund a grows 10%, fund b at 15% but are meant to be 50/50. At quarter they rebalance to that even though fund b was doing better)

Call fidelity to rebalance your entire 401k for past and future contributions. I did the same recently. They’re great to work with

Calling is pretty easy. It is very easy to do online also

On fidelity portal you have a link to rebalance, I have done it multiple times and it only takes a few minutes.

Serious question - is there a reverse FIRE strategy? I like the idea of saving and retiring early, but the one hiccup I see (and sorry if this is grim) is if you die earlier than expected. I’d be worried that I would minimize lifestyle and fun for retirement at 50 but I’d die at 49. How about a way to work 9 months out of the year and retire/travel/relax for 3 months? This way you guaranteed your dreams/etc. are fulfilled

Curious what others risk tolerance / budget is for primary housing expense. Currently looking at houses and what I ‘can’ afford according to the math feels like way more house than I ‘should’ buy. For reference I’m a B4 7th yr partner. Last year total comp was around $1.8 and total other monthly fixed expenses are in the $20k/mo neighborhood. Just wondering how others approach this. Thanks.

Can someone explain to me what my cost would be if I took a 50k cares act withdrawal from my 401k? It says there is no 10% early withdrawal penalty but the income tax will have to be paid. If I withdraw 50k how much will I actually take home after applicable fees and NYC taxes? I'm trying to figure out if it is worth dipping into my retirement. Do anyone have any experience with this? Thank you.
