SO and I are debating contributing to 401k this year since the rate of return is around -11% on our portfolios this year. I believe it would be better off saving the cash in my account.

I'm thinking of contributing again when/if the market picks up next year. Thoughts?

You aren't serious, right ...?

You have it perfectly backwards. You want to invest when the market's down. That's when you'll be buying it at its cheapest.

likesmart

Bingo!!! That’s why the market crashes like it does! Everyone (the majority) seem to stop investing or worse… Sell off when we are down! Just DCA. Dollar cost average and continue as planned! Don’t worry about the current value… Doesn’t matter until you’re ready to retire anyways!

That is a really really bad idea. Don’t do that

like

401k is a long term investment

like

Also consider any matching from your employers. It’s basically free money. Don’t miss out on that. The market will recover and you won’t want to have missed “the sale.”

If there are other circumstances you haven’t described that’d better explain your position— let us know. Do you have an emergency fund? Do you have high interest debt? Immediate need for cash?

like

OP expects everyone to read their mind…

Would you consider it a sound financial move to sell your house when the real estate market crashes so that you can rebuy when it’s hot again?

If no, then why would you believe differently about your retirement portfolio?

like

Great analogy, going to borrow.

like

You want to get in when prices are high and leave the market when prices are low? That’s not how it works friend.

like

So you want to buy high and sell low?

likefunny

I don’t mean this is a mean way, but how are so many people in consulting and other professional services so financially illiterate…like, how do you guys provide value to clients on financials if you have trouble with not market timing…

like

I’ll go against the grain here… it depends on your timeline. The market is in a downturn but this isn’t even close to a crash. It can and probably will get worse IMO. If you need the money in the next couple of years and think you can manage your money/investments better then go for it, but if you don’t need the money and far away from retirement age, I don’t see why you would stop.

likefunny

Was referring to the couple of comments mocking OP as “going against the grain”

like

If you NEED cash, then just contribute match, but do not let the market’s short-term up or down determine whether you invest in your 401k. Once you have enough cash for your short term needs, bump up 401k as high as you can.

like

Meanwhile I am doubling my contributions

like

Haha

like

This is the best time to be contributing.

like

-11% down means you can buy at a discount. Put more in…

like

This is exactly the time when you should be contributing more, not less.

Contribute but don't invest if you are so confident of a -11% return. Why pay tax to uncle sam.

BTFD bro - buy when it’s down, not up

You can put the money into a stable value fund. Basically cash until you want to allocate risk assets.

You could contribute to 401k for tax benefits and then allocate to money market fund if that’s what you think is best. Personally I don’t time they market when investing long term.

I am trying to justify house buying in HCOL city. The house cost is minimum 1.4m .monthly mortgage would be at least 7k(with just around 2k principal) rest goes to either int, tax. Not to mention regular house maintenance. How is it better than 3.5k rental. I understand appreciation and own house independence. But I am just trying to make numbers work.
