Oh my friend. I wasted 15 years of my life in a corporate role at a DFW based retailer. A surprising number of retailers are based here.
You can make a lifelong career out of it, but be prepared for low pay and rounds of layoffs every time stock takes a dive. Retail does not pay well, even at the corporate level, unless you’re in a VP+ level role. Even at that level, consulting pays way more.
If you take the role, make sure you like the team and personalities you’ll be working with. It should also have an awesome WLB to make up for the low pay. Also consider career growth/trajectory. Retail doesn’t have the formal path as consulting, make sure you know what’s next or what the options are, so you aren’t stuck in a cave for years. This has been the frustrating piece for consultants I’ve known that have gone from consulting to retail. They’re typically back in consulting within a year or two.
Good luck!
80 hours a week in corporate? Why would anyone leave consulting for that?
