Do you want to sell your soul to work for the devil?
Not particularly. My accepted offer is tech, too but agency side on what I see as the least evil of the MAANG/FAANG group. It’s a competitive comp just not FB competitive, cool team/agency, great WLB. Basically I just need to convince myself I’m not insane for walking away from that much money and being part of Oculus/Meta quest which is what I see as the future of a whole lot of digital.
DONT GET TRAPPED IN THE METAVERSE SAVE YOURSELF
From an opportunity loss perspective if Meta was down to hire you now for such a huge amount they would *likely* be down to do so again at a later time.
This is helpful. I walked on an Amazon offer a few years ago and I don’t regret it but I will often get messages from recruiters there and then once we swap emails to schedule the intro call, I think they go to input my info into the candidate database and my declined offer pops up and that’s seen as a negative because most of the time I don’t even get to the screener call with them anymore. Granted, it’s prob for the better bc Amazon isn’t known for being a great place for wlb or mental health. Part of me worries that declining will get me blacklisted here, too. But I think that might be my anxiety.
I think I want to keep the agency job. The TC is great for an agency, supposedly good WLB, I know happy people there! But Meta TC is just under ~$300k. I can’t even visualize what that much money would mean for my life/future. The base is about $30 more than the agency but the agency is offering the same bonus and some stock too. I know some people that worked on and with that particular Meta team anddddddd it was not a good time. I’ve been client side before and am weary that the grass isn’t necessarily greener. Am I insane to consider turning down Meta and that much $?
The agency would be giving me shares yearly that are fully vested after 2 years. I was told by someone there that’s ex FAANG that they were pretty close to their tech shares but shorter vesting.
Meta would be fully vested at 4 years. They vest quarterly when I start but bc it’s not an SWE role, the TOTAL over those 4 years is <$100k
I think shares will be about equal except the agency is vested faster. I’m not 100% the savviest person at this though so totally open to correction if I’m not understanding.
I was big tech when the panini hit but not FAANG, and it was an even more cutthroat review cycle / re org culture. This is a company you’d be shocked to hear this about. Idk if meta reviews/culture are like that, but I’ve ALWAYS been more secure and considered the “A team” agency side, which is weird.
You’re not crazy. The thought of having to answer that I work at meta every time someone asks me what I do is what keeps me away. Even if I work on meta as a client now. Not saying it’s logical, but it’s how I feel.
