This is specifically for Family Law paralegals. How many hours are you required to bill a day? What is your caseload? What is your pay? I've been working for an attorney for 2.5 years and I never worked in law before this position. I feel super stressed and feel like she expects too much of me. For reference, I'm expected to bill 4 hours a day (I work 32 hours/week), she has between 80-100 cases and I work on all of them, and I make $28/hr.

4 hours/day is not a lot of time. There’s no way you can handle that many cases and be efficient.

So that's not a normal caseload? I'm always stressed that I'm going to miss filing deadlines. I have about 40 open tasks right now ranging from responses to discovery, updating declaration's, request for order's, I&E's, financial disclosures, Joinder, etc...

*continued from above: We've had 12 people come and go since I've started because they couldn't handle the workload. I want to leave but I'm worried it wouldn't be any different at another office.

It truly helps to land a job with a great boss. I hope that you find a great boss too. All the best.

Although I now handle commercial Real Estate and estate planning/funding matters, I have a background in family law and I have worked as a paralegal for the last 22 years. I think the missing piece of the conversation is to determine what exactly you consider billable hours and what you are expected to do with the remainder of your time during the day. if you are working with a solo and you are handling everything else for the firm every day, then billing four hours a day is decent. If you are with a large firm and you have an assistant or a secretary who supports you and other paralegals/lawyers you should be billing closer to 8 hours of an 8 hour day.

That’s a big case load but does your firm assign cases to each paralegal? Do you all work as a team on each case? Are some paralegals assigned to Discovery and others doing petitions?

We bill 30 hours a week.

Don’t want to drive 700 miles per week M-F. What will dual model be like going forward? 1-2 times week, 4-5 month? Seems like tax was more flexible than audit pre-Covid

I’ve been approached my by company that one of our large clients (who im currently project managing for) is looking for a consultant of sorts, and if they hire us, I’d be the first person asked to take on this consultant role. This isn’t something my company typically offers and would greatly change the scope of my role. Has anyone ever taken on a role like this? If so, were you able to negotiate a percentage of the consulting fee? Or was it a bump in salary during the project?

For anyone who receives a quarterly bonus or raise in some form, does your employer start to schedule you for less hours when your raise kicks in, or pull you from a future schedule entirely once you receive a bonus; only to put you back on once the hours you would have worked and earned the amount given are passed? Ie; a part time employee getting $200.00 in a quarterly bonus and then not being scheduled a whole week during a bi-weekly pay period where they would have earned more on the clock…?
