This question is specifically for corporate accounting transitioning to FP&A role. I’m currently a Senior Accountant with over 8YOE. I’ve been wanting to transition over to the FP&A side since I realized (after 8 years) I get bored of just following strict rules, reconciling and tying out numbers all day, and creating controls to mitigate/remediate material weaknesses. There is an Sr. FP&A role that just opened within the same company and I tend to apply for that role. Continue below…

I’m looking for advice on how I should explain why I want to transition over to FP&A on both my resume and interview. I work closely with FP&A and I feel that my experience will translate well for that role. I analyze the financial statements with them on a monthly basis but haven’t done any projecting/modeling/forecasting work. I feel I can be more creative with FP&A and my work will be a bit more enjoyable. Also, I don’t have a CPA nor Big4 experience, so I don’t think I can go far in my accounting career. Any advice would help. Thanks!

You already explained it here. You want a more creative/interactive role- that’s your answer when/if they ask why you want the job. I transitioned from B4 Audit as a Sr. to a Sr. FP&A Analyst role. I had no forecasting/budget experience but it’s all learned from the process. You have advantages over Finance folk because you are well-integrated into accounting principles and how things impact the P&L.

Also, you can certainly go far in an accounting/finance career without a CPA or B4 experience.

My manager casually threw out that she had an exec tell her it’s fine if she wants to close my division down next year. We are a niche team in a large company. I asked her to clarify as I am worried about my team (and me) she said we would be “well taken care of” as in receive severance…she was so casual about it and said she didn’t know what she would do - we’re performing well, but it’s a small market. What do I do? Warn my team? Look for jobs? I have been here for 20 years w/niche skills…

It feels like my pay and title are lower than my scope of duties. I manage Youtube channels and do all strategy, planning, talent management, rework content for socials, reporting, graphic design, + a bunch of other stuff. 2017 grad so technically a 4th year. Lateraled to a CRE boutique in NYC that’s a major player. Learned quickly that my experience/knowledge/organization is not up to par (was a COG in the machine at prior firm). Just had EOY review and, though positive sounding, they’re dropping me to a 3rd year to ensure I’m not billing as a 4th year and able to do the work to learn/get up to par. I feel pretty okay about it (market salary deduction notwithstanding), but want to make sure I’m not being naive.

Hey! I currently work in sales, have about 3 years experience, and a Bachelors degree in Business Admin/Mgmt & Marketing. I’m looking to pivot to finance and aim to get a Jr. Financial Analyst position. Is it possible to do so through online certifications like LinkedIn? Or does anyone have advice on a path I should take to pivot sooner rather than later? Thank you!

From consulting to investing / lending - anyone has guidance on how to make the move? I’m a consulting manager with finance experience pre-MBA. Thinking about pivoting into investing / lending but struggle to find an angle - assumed that it would be hard to break into investing but lending would be great (all the way from corporate banking to mezz). Any guidance on seeking relevant experience while in consulting?
