By jumping firms to get a comp boost
2x the amount you would get as a normal raise in the next year is what I shoot for
I speak pretty and make passable PowerPoints
But seriously, I did competitive speech and debate throughout high school and college and was quite good so that helped with my executive presence. The biggest part of consulting imo is storytelling. The analysis is great but you have to provide the "so what?". PowerPoint is primarily how we condense months of analysis into actionable insights
Storytelling, networking and active listening. If you get these three skills right, you can go far in most environments.
Worked at a small company as a consultant for Pharma companies so it was easier to stand out and become a top performer. Throughout my 5 years there, had 3 significant negotiation discussions. Started at 55k and jumped to 82k and then 105k and then 140k (with smaller increases along the way).
Recently just left to go into industry for 150k base, 180k TC with bonus.
The key I’ve found is to understand your worth (interview around and figure out what you could be making elsewhere) and to exert leverage when you have it.
Never threaten to leave if you don’t get something, but subtly hint at your unhappiness and that you want to make it work but money/title/role is an issue.
Storytelling and public speaking. I took classes on both so I could feel more comfortable sharing information to clients.

I manage alliances, so my daily work consists of business development, account targeting, collateral creation, and partner strategy. Good presentation/call skills are essential to my job. Getting an MBA from a global top 20 school was extremely beneficial in giving my salary a boost. In terms of self learning, I have tried Coursera and Udemy courses, but haven’t finished any courses longer than 5 classes, although my current workplace offers a lot of learning options that I will be talking advantage of (ie AWS Cloud Practitioner, Azure Fundamentals).
