Totally valid, but I think timing will be key. Give yourself a few weeks to settle back into things and get acclimated before you ask. It will set up a strong narrative, which will allow you to focus on your value and impact.… Rather than the fact that you’ve been away or have had a life change. You wouldn’t want it to seem like you’re simply just asking because you had a baby and need to make more money. Once you’ve given it some time, you can shoot an email to your boss or HR and say something like this:
“As I settle back into my role, I’ve been reflecting on my contributions to the team and the scope of my responsibilities. I’d appreciate the opportunity to have a conversation about aligning my compensation with the value I bring to the practice.
Would you be open to scheduling a time to discuss this in the coming days?”
Be prepared to give examples on your contributions to the workplace in order to highlight your value.
Thanks I like this approach!
I don’t think maternity leave has any bearing on the conversation all all tbh
I strongly agree with this as well
EA1 has it right. However, be prepared for any negative feedback as well.

This is a good question. Some people actually don’t know that you should only be rated based on the months you were in office. My old VP was going to give me a lower score because I was out on maternity leave. But, my boss double checked and told him. I hope it works out for you.
I did great work prior to maternity leave on a major project. My leave started in October 2024 and I noticed quite a few promotions across multiple employees come February 2025. That’s why I feel like a promote would be justified.
I would watch asking too soon. Might be a good way to find yourself getting canned. For some reason some people are really bothered by someone who takes maternity leave, they see it as a “paid vacation”. I’ve worked several places where the office had already laid out a plan to push the person out of the office before she even came back and were really resentful. It is definitely not right, but it does happen. I think I would take a breath, work hard for a bit, get everyone used to you being back, then ask.
Hardly a paid vacation haha but get that timing is important.
>Now that I'm back from my extended period of 0 productivity where I was carried by other team members and my productivity is lower because I'm a new parent, give me more money
lol. lmao even.

Rude. It’s more like, since I’ve been on leave, you’ve had to rely on 3 people to do my job, and I still had to come back and clean up the mess, even after training them months before my leave to be prepared?
Depends on how your relationship and your contribution is with the organization. Obviously they have to hold your seat for you during this time and you might catch them with their backs against the wall so you might get a raise, but at the same time they might make your life live at hell as they look for your replacement. Only you know your team and you must assess correctly
Weird timing to negotiate honestly. You come back from not working and then ask to get pay more
Umm no.. I don't think that's a good time to take on more responsibility. Asking for a raise after taking off work or a promotion...huh?
