I made the same move from an admin. Moving to a consultancy really propelled my learning and also gave me a much better understanding of project management, roadmapping, change management etc.
If I wanted to go back to being an admin, I think I would come 10x more prepared and effective.
That being said, utilization is a pain, context switching between several projects and clients can be challenging, as well as effective time management.
SC 1 nailed it. Nothing new to add except pay is typically better in consulting as the skill set to succeed is much more wide in range.
If you switch over to consulting, you may lose your hard skills that you have gained, and by that I mean, your hands on configurations and muscle memory, because you may end up building slides, Jira roadmaps, and excel trackers instead of being in an actual org. That is one risk, but also one reward depending on what you’re trying to do with your career.
Good idea - get an understanding in the interview how quickly they expect you to be billable, and how well they're actually project portfolio compliments what you bring to the table. Especially in times like this most companies will be holding on tight to the consultants who make them money
They expect you to be billable right away. In this market they aren’t bringing in anyone to sit on the bench and “get up to speed”.
