Amazed at how many straight nos there are. Singapore is 5 hours away from China, and if you read the news, they’re disallowing people flying in from China. Their public health system is also extremely efficient because there’s only 5 million people in the country - every single person with any connection or exposure to a potentially infected person is monitored or quarantined.
You’re actually in some ways safer there than wherever you are. Only issue I’d have with your travel is the long time in flights and airports. It’s not the country of destination that’s a concern.
Go to singapore. Its incredible, you will love it
Cool. I think I’ve proven my point
Slightly different view here: agree that your chances of catching anything is going to be very low, and personally I wouldn’t let that stop me from traveling. I’d be more concerned about potential (over) reaction by the authorities that may force you to change your travel plans or self-quarantine when you travel home. I’d also be concerned about how some of my colleagues/friends will react around me... as Navigant1 has shown not everyone is rational.
My assessment is based in rationality....

No
And yet cases keep increasing
Tbh I’m more concerned living here in nyc x.x
Exactly. SF Bay Area has a good amount of cases now too.
I’m with PwC 2, my friend was just in Singapore for a wedding and said it was fine. That said, it’s a risk given that you’re in a plane/hub and could come into contact with someone who’s sick.
I live in Singapore right now and concur with the “be smart but don’t panic” sentiments. Yes, traveling can always increase your exposure to the coronavirus, but it’s not life or death here. There are no shortages of groceries, no runs on the bank, etc. Just breathe. We will get through this. 🙂
Well I live in Tanjong Pagar and the FairPrice & Cold Storage both are fully stocked, still have pretty much all food items you may want - including multiple bottles / jugs of water. Just checked last night too, so ...
Navigant1 where are you? You sound like you’re in full panic mode. Not saying it’s imprudent to be concerned, but you are like full on panicking
The US. I've been in healthcare/ epidemiology/ emergency management my whole career, and watching the CDC briefings, reading the body language, it's what's not being shared...there is reason for concern.
1.Almost every distributor (ie cardinal, mckesson etc...) have placed PPE on strategic holds, without the ability to order. Not done lightly.
2.The fragility of the healthcare supply chain is of chief concern. A vast majority of life sustaining pharmaceutical precursors come from China. Production is shut down. Unless this is resolved in China, you're talking about a global shortage on drugs of all types.
3.Specific to travel, especially to densely populated island nations. Think about the environment as a petri dish. Theres no out if disease spreads and you are travel banned in place.
4.Healthcare in developed nations of the first world type are a glass rod. Only so much tension can be placed until they break. In the US, on any given day, there are 60 to 90k ventilators available (total). About 80% of ICU beds are full. There are insufficient resources to treat a pandemic...even less so on a small city state like Singapore. I've seen the true effect of SARS and it pales in comparison to what we are seeing in China now.
5.Global JIT Supply chain from China. Hyundai has already suspended production, as has Tesla. Most consumer electronics are made in China, but the larger issue is the OE components that wont be available. The global economic impact should be considered. (We will see if everyone is miraculously better on Monday and goes to work #CCP, thereby furthering the spread of the disease)
Ive been across all of Asia. I agree it's an awesome experience, but imo now is not the time to go.

Don’t listen to the puritans, fear mongers, or the mainstream media. Check the status with the Singapore government then go to Singapore.
Navigant 1: you do realize that these institutions are incentivized by annual budgets with no real performance metrics on keeping people safe? Spreading fear goes a long way to budget renewal process.
I’m not saying be reckless, I’m saying understand the perspective. After all, YOLO.
Something to consider
Virus Fallout From Singapore Conference Spreads Across Europe

I understand where you’re coming from and tbh I agree with you mostly. But my case for OP not to go would not be because Singapore is dangerous as hell, but that maybe now isn’t a good time to do international travel, period. Because whatever’s happened in Singapore can easily happen anywhere else and might have already but we just don’t know yet. It could easily be where you live Navigant, if it’s a place that has a massive tourist and corporate traffic like Singapore.
I think that’s what most people who’ve responded here have taken issue with what you’ve said, because you’ve basically suggested that Singapore is as bad as China if not Wuhan when the reality is so different.
There are 37k cases in China and 43 I believe as of now in Singapore that are confirmed. Many European countries have 10+ confirmed that I’m sure will easily catch up to Singapore’s as days go by. The US has 10 over itself.
OP, just make sure you’re prepared for any checks and immigration difficulties with time passing because we don’t know how border control might change things. I’m sure your sister will be fine - just as I’m sure my family will be alright. Just make sure to read mainstream media and not rely on fear mongering social media links and pics. Vigilance is key but not hysteria.
Many reliable sources (channel news Asia, straits times) out there plus my personal ones have noted that all stores are properly restocked (back to what Navigant was saying based on social media pics and posts he prob saw) with no issues today. No need to worry about a small burst of hysteria from a minority few in the country who are in areas you’d never go as a tourist.
I wouldn’t go only for the reason that I wouldn’t want to get stuck there should travel restrictions change, depending on what your nationality is. Travel bans could continue going crazy and Singapore would easily be one of the next on the list.
Virus wise, you are more likely to catch the normal flu that this if you’re not being careful.
Life is moving along just fine in SG. Take the necessary precautions and you’ll have nothing to worry about.
If we applied Nav1’s approach to everything, we’d have to stop living the way we live - no more driving, no more bacon, no more whatever it is that could kill you - life also kills you, in the end :)
There’s worse things to be worried about, no need to live in fear. Unfortunately, nowadays all we do is fear things - people of color, religions, countries, ideologies - bloody waste of time.
Take your trip, enjoy the time with your sister. Live life.
No.... are you kidding
Btw, 5 Brits just confirmed positive today after contact with individual testing positive in Singapore.
Travel restrictions changing could complicate plans... but also, is it true that almost all of the people who have died from it have been much older people who already had some health issues? From what I’ve heard, the disease itself isn’t actually as deadly to the average healthy young person. Not that I actually ever know anything about anything, don’t quote me 🥴

While death rate from coronavirus isn’t as high as flu, I absolutely agree that China has a tendency to underplay/twist number so not sure how reliable those numbers actually are.
I also think it’s hilarious when people like SM1 call people who are careful puritans and fear mongers. Death rate could keep being this low but if this isn’t as contained as it currently is because people are being quarantined so quickly, and if this infects the same amount of people as the Spanish flu in the early 1900’s, that’s still a lot of people who die...the fear right now is that there are a lot of unknowns with this strain of virus and how fast it could spread. Mortality rate isn’t the end all, be all...
For context... china only officially had approx 60 flu deaths (official numbers), so like for like, this is FAR more deadly.
