@pwc1 stay in consulting as long as you are enjoying it and travel works for you. No good answer there.
Future role was running a business unit. Recruitment was a series of executive and board interviews
Money more in industry but would have made it in consulting too. Huge learning experience. Happiness is good at both places.
@consultant - partnership model is great for sustainability and professional support. Not often ideal for scaling a business. Politics is part of every firm there are always teams where culture is toxic but by and large it’s not the norm in most quality organizations
@kpmg3 it came down to the role and opportunity to do something slightly different and get out of the comfort zone. Felt like that I had the partner thing down and while some days I wonder why did I sign up for this, the learning has been fantastic
@Bain got headhunted
Are you hiring?
@ kpmg5 - yes, I think I can come back to Big 4, because there will be less of a learning curve to understand the nuances that such partnerships entail. I have never thought of career with end games - it’s always about what will be fun in next 5 years, that helps me grow and contribute. And then roll the dice :)
What is your future role? How was recruitment?
How long should one stay in consulting? I’ve been consulting for past two years. Expecting an offer from a leading CRM company.
How does a partner just up and leave? I thought once you accept the position it’s quite difficult to get out until retirement?
How does impact the retirement benefits you would typically get if you were to retire as a partner?
Thanks for the answer!!! Wish you best of luck in your new challenge!!!
. How much money before and after ?
. How much happiness before and after?
@director vertical - technology
@ Kpmg - partners leave all the time for various reasons. You ofcourse have to manage it carefully.
Very cool. Are you married and/or have children? I agree it takes courage to make such a big move after being made at a big 4. Trying to understand your personal risk profile
@consultant2. Hours are the same when I was a partner, 9-11 hr days with minimal weekend. Like you, I have tried to be an involved Dad but not sure whether my wife will agree :). finding the balance is always hard but easier if you look quarter over quarter vs week over week.
OP looks like you walked away from a lot of money (you said you were young), and a more comfortable career (keeping family life in mind) and traded it for a high burn one. I hope you gave this decision a lot of thought, as I have seen a lot of people enamored by the initial excitement and then regretful as reality sunk in. Wish you the best and hopefully you haven’t burnt too many bridges at the firm you are leaving.
It’s awesome that you did this. I’m a director in a similar position where I have an opportunity at the one rung below yours in a large pre ipo company.
Im in a unique situation where I actually love the partners that I work for and I love the team that generally works for me. I’m on the younger end and my metrics are good but not good enough hence constantly get overlooked for partnership.
I recently received an offer(headhunted and did not apply) and have asked them to give me some time to think.
Money in industry is approximately 35-40% more - based on actual bonus payout. But I know if I stay here it will all work out once I get the promotion.
Hands down my biggest concern in moving is the rebuilding of the trusted executive relationships. How did you overcome that concern?
