Sigh - this is why we get sued.
I would write her an email and say we have discussed this previously bla bla. It is an incredibly important religious holiday in the Muslim community. I appreciate your understanding.
If she responds positively. Super.
If not, forward to your pp and say sorry to bug you, not sure how to handle this. Would really appreciate your help.
Change your manager
Rising Star
Like others say, take it off. But for future reference take both days off, and cancel the PTO day that’s not it.
I do this around my birthday every year (I know it’s different). I know I’ll be taking a day off before and/or after my birthday. So I just request both days off and closer to the date I decide which ones I keep, and which one so work.
Company/boss is always happy having me work an “extra” day, and I don’t have to explain anything to anyone.
Yep. Came here to say this. Just book both days next year. I’m definitely not on your manager’s side at all but, lesson learned, play smarter next year. Sorry you’re going through this. Ridiculous.
Take off expressing you are observing your religion and that you hope she’s ok with it. If she’d like to escalate the matter you can both bring it up to HR
….she’ll get scared cuz deep down she knows she’s wrong
This is how you have to deal with cowards
1) You should have put it on the calendar
2) report her as DEI complaint
Your manager is definitely a trump supporter.
Always, schedule BOTH days off. And cancel the one you don't use. Eid Mubarak!!
Smart!
This person deserves a lesson in management, diversity, and corporate diplomacy; possible also humility. Please report them immediately.
Eid Mubarak Sadiqi/a
Take the day off. Don’t be scared. Confidently tell your manager that you’re taking the day off as this is a religious holiday, and you’re happy to get HR involved to resolve this.
Going forward, you should always just book the time in advance and at worst you don't use it but at least you have it booked in advance if you do. This is to account for managers who are jerks.
It seems your manager is a jerk, unfortunately. If your project isn't on fire, and you gave her a heads up, I don't see the issue.
I feel like this is someone who would ding you on a snapshot of you took the day on what she defines as short notice.
I remember one time years ago I had to work late on Christmas Eve. Never again! I just take the whole day off. Your manager is horrible and this should be raised to HR. Holidays are important
For future reference:
1. Tell not ask
2. Keep clear in all communications
3. “Of course you’re not suggesting I can’t take my religious holiday, a right I have according to the Constitution. You would never suggest something I could sue for” or something like that. Both of my parents have needed to drop the lawsuit threat before.
Not nice. What’s the policy for how much advance notice you need to take time off?

I guess it just needs to be approved by her (which we agreed we wouldn’t do).

Eid Mubarak!
Also make sure this manager is not getting exceptional for being toxic to team and showing bad leadership
Raise with the HR, she need to learn the customs of various religions.
Pull a sickie
I think she needs to be reported. I am not saying we have the best company culture in the world, but this behavior shouldn’t be tolerated.
I am an atheist and even I am going for the morning prayer :)
This is ridiculous I’m so sorry you have to go through this but Eid Mubarak! I hope she gets repercussions for this
Geez. The misery of this industry, how in the world could you be getting this much push back over this?!
Hey all, thanks for the advice. You really made me understand that she is totally out of line, I guess I had grown accustomed to her behaviour. I ended up working half the day and reported to HR and her manager the following Monday. A lot of things went on (and it was not the first time she had been reported for religious and racial insensitivity- she said some weird things to me in a later conversation about her not understanding that I’m black and Muslim). Ultimately the investigation ruled in my favour and I got a formal apology, I don’t think she’s at the firm any longer. Suing here in the U.K. doesn’t work like it does in the US. I ended up leaving that role anyway and taking something more senior at a better (&more prestigious) competitor. Win win :)
That’s so messed up :( You deserve to be able to celebrate your religious holiday. Report this lady to HR -she’s acting way up!
