Sigh - this is why we get sued.
I would write her an email and say we have discussed this previously bla bla. It is an incredibly important religious holiday in the Muslim community. I appreciate your understanding.
If she responds positively. Super.
If not, forward to your pp and say sorry to bug you, not sure how to handle this. Would really appreciate your help.
Change your manager
Rising Star
Like others say, take it off. But for future reference take both days off, and cancel the PTO day that’s not it.
I do this around my birthday every year (I know it’s different). I know I’ll be taking a day off before and/or after my birthday. So I just request both days off and closer to the date I decide which ones I keep, and which one so work.
Company/boss is always happy having me work an “extra” day, and I don’t have to explain anything to anyone.
Yep. Came here to say this. Just book both days next year. I’m definitely not on your manager’s side at all but, lesson learned, play smarter next year. Sorry you’re going through this. Ridiculous.
Please take the day off and enjoy your Eid. And be sure to raise this to HR upon your return on Monday.
You’ve gotten enough advice on what to do… so I won’t go there except say wow! What a terrible manager. how much longer do you need to work with her?
This is exactly why people change job. I’m so sorry you have to put up with such unreasonable manager. You are entitled to take a day off for religious belief as long as you communicate in advance.
You should sue and cash in
Holy racist manager. I’m not someone who celebrates Eid, but I have NEVER denied anyone for taking one day for religious observance.
This is a VALUES VIOLATION and should be reported. Run, don’t walk. We have a FLOATING HOLIDAY specifically for this reason. Seriously.
Next time, book both days
I’m Muslim & what I did was block off Friday , sent a OOO notification to my client & team a week before.
Worse case: call in sick
I have an amazing boss ( client side ) , I have less work so I knew me taking off is not going to affect anything or anyone .
In your case, would suggest blocking off 2 days & then you can email manager & cc. HR explaining the situation & if you need to cancel a day off & work instead no one will question that.
You can probably adjust the time off by taking a day off some other time n not putting that into the system for adjustment but block your calendar , mark it as OOO & invite your team.
As for your manager, write an email to the HR , cc her , her boss about religious discrimination but you better have another job offer in hand when doing this. Oh write anonymously a review on glassdoor about your experience “after” you leave the job with no names being mentioned.
Pto. Personal time off - no explanation needed, required. Nobody is legally permitted to ask.
Take it off. For future never have a verbal agreement and ensure you take the potential day off. Worse come worst your last fast you just sleep in.
22nd is a Saturday
Pro
Exactly. It would mean I wouldn’t need to take a day off.
The 22nd would have been a Saturday though. So you want to do a flexible day off only on Fridays?
The mandem celebrate Eid, but still consulting on a religious holiday.
So what happened today?
Next time, you take 21 and 22 off and inform her that you'd cancel one of the days once confirmed. That way she can't force you into anything. That's what I did when I had a difficult manager. Now I'm at a much better place where I don't even have to inform my current manager for my day offs.
Other option is to call in sick on the day of. She can't make you work when you're sick. And yes you're sick, sick of her.
Just say you are sick and take the day off, it is just one day, and that too Friday
