Torn between a large, prestigious local firm with practices across various areas of law and a smaller firm that focuses on a niche area; comparable pay and benefits.

Problem is, the small, niche firm gets 75% of its business from one client, which is obviously concerning. But they would let me (2nd yr assoc.) do substantive work like depos, hearings, etc. Whereas the large firm would have me doing “grunt work” for a couple years until I’m more senior. Which would you choose and why?

Have you done substantive work before like the kind you’ll be doing at the small firm? If not then go large. The name, if as prestigious as you say, can open many doors that a smaller niche firm may not.

Guess it depends on what you want out of your career then. Small niche firms will pigeonhole you way more the longer you stay there than a large firm ever will. So if you know you want to stay in the niche field and make a career out of it then I’d stay. If you’re not sure or you know you don’t want to practice that long term then I’d go large.

like

You already work at the niche firm or you're choosing between 2 opportunities?

I already work the niche firm. Large made me an offer of much more $, niche firm matched it. I neglected to say that in the post, which is obviously an important detail.

I’ve been working at a rather prestigious midsized firm in a big city for almost a year and a half now. I have been having a lot of trouble picking up work from senior partners. We are required to bill at least 150 hours per month to meet our requirement. My months are typically only 110-130 hours. It seems like the senior partners already have their “go to” associate for things. Does anyone have any suggestions on how i can increase my workload? I reach out for work pretty much weekly.

It may seem obvious, but in my experience partners value trial experience over anything else, so get it however you can. For example, my firm will favor a former prosecutor who has seen the courtroom a lot but has no civil litigation experience (not even a depo) over a seasoned associate who has only second chaired cases with a partner but hasn’t tried a case. Even trying a case and losing gives you credibility at my firm because you still did it.
