Trying to switch to another firm for more money / promotion. What’s a good excuse you can use for the switch that’s appropriate for interviews. All I can come up with can instantly be replied with “well, why can’t you do that at your own firm?”

The diplomatic term is: undervalued. Don't knock on your previous firm too much though. it's a bad look.

Yeah but isn’t that like bad mouthing my old firm?

All recruiters know you want more money and promotion. You don’t need to be coy about it. It is really not an excuse, it is 99.99% of the time people switch jobs

You can keep it simple. You want a change and you see company X as a great option that aligns with your career ambitions at this time. You can add a few lines about why that specific company etc

Yeah but another consultant I was informational interviewing says why not do this at ur own firm

I want more money and a promotion is fine. No reason you can’t explore the market for your services to see if there is a higher ceiling out there.

No. Maybe your firm has a freeze on promotions, maybe another company is growing like crazy and you want in. Recruiters do business by talking with people who are not satisfied with their current situation. They expect it.

Yeah it’s not that difficult lol. I was getting exit opps at D in both tech and consulting firms with 1 YOE. Pro tip is you can lateral, get a raise, and then even stretch the truth on what you did in the first gig for an even better exit opp down the line ;)

Nice!

Can you give me a referral lol ?

Interviewed for 2 jobs I am highly interested in. One offered the job already, but the other one hasn’t made a decision yet but should this week. I have until tomorrow to accept the offer but would like to work for the other company if the compensation package is better. Any advice? I don’t want to accept and then have to cancel, but there’s no guarantee the other job will hire me either. 😩

Has anyone ever asked to renegotiate their salary after starting a job? I’m 2 months into my new job and I have far more responsibilities than what I was told. It’s a lot different than what was relayed in the posting and during the interviews. Additionally, they hired my counter part in as a senior manager which is at least $30k more than what I make. My peer has more experience so I expect that but I feel that I should be paid more, however I don’t want to leave a bad impression… any advice?

Hello there. I have been interviewing with Okta and got through all 5 rounds of interviews. They say they want to offer me the job but there is a global freeze for all marketing roles at the company. This is a recent incident happened to me, was interviewed for tcs, salary discussion happened on 12th March and was told to wait for final approval and was told that offer letter would be rolled out in 2 weeks. Hr did not negotiate on the CTC either. After waiting for a month i tried reaching HR they did not respond. After multiple emails they simply say that they cannot move forward due to high deviations. Guys is this normal in TCS that even after final CTC discussions ,candidates get rejectd.

For in-house counsel roles, does firm prestige matter? For example, would the fact that an applicant is from Sullivan & Cromwell vs, say, White & Case matter at all, or is it much more about experience/interview? Does it matter as much as law school credentials? Assuming a mid-level corporate associate seeking to go in-house.
