Sensible path, better to me than staying in consulting. For three reasons:
1. Consulting to big tech is a very crowded lane right now. I don’t solicit referrals and have done 50+ last year off this app. When hiring a new role on our team, over half of candidates came from big 4 / T2 / MBB.
2. At manager+ levels, we have concerns over cultural fit. Frankly we dont want your cultural issues, and dont want leads who only know how to manage clients by working their teams to death.
3. A software business experience will let you understand our business model. Fundamentally consulting is a labor based model. Significantly different model for us which impacts every element of our business
100%. That's what I find so disappointing. The reason I stayed was because I thought switching service lines would get me into a role where I could really add value. But I'm only marginally closer to the strategic finance experience I'm looking for with far more emphasis on the politics of consulting. I'm trying to run toward the work I really want to do, but I worry the the perception is that I'm just trying to run toward my "reward" for enduring 7 years in consulting.
I just want to go somewhere where I can focus on actual analysis, deriving insights into the business and solving real problems. I dream about days where I'm building a real depth of knowledge in my company's business model in an industry that I truly enjoy, and not going to meetings to "be visible" and "show our value."
What type of role would you be looking to land at big tech?
Strategy most likely / nothing super technical
