Most places in the U.S., I would say ‘no, don’t do it’, but for Chicago, 100% yes.
I lived there for four years. The winter is so bad that having a comfortable place with good furnishings/amenities made a huge difference in my outlook during another crappy February day. Didn’t need a gym membership my last two years, thanks to my building.
That, and (assuming you’re not getting a studio) if you like playing this role, you can host your friends for dinners/pregames/parties… super clutch during those winter months.
Reading this from New York and crying
$2100 gets you a low end studio in Manhattan during normal times.
I can refer you to my apartment.
Luxury apartment building in Streeterville
Bud, I came from a simple family with little means too. Had nothing, always questioned what I should have or deserve. I kept saving longer than most and ended up buying a house at 27. The equity on the first home and my head for investments got me my second in 2019 while I rented out the first. Live within your means, build multiple cash streams, and you'll realize that you probably will handle your cash better than most because of where you came from and what you've had to go through. I'm 35 now. Good luck out there.
Also, if possible buy a house, not an apartment. Houses appreciate faster over time, you just have to be patient and learn a few things on YouTube to help fix things yourself. Ever since I was a kid, it always stuck with me that Lex Luther fought Superman in the first movie all because he wanted to create more land.
Get it
I did but am around $1800 for rent and $80k salary without counting sign on bonus. Still am maxing out employer 401k and roth with money leftover too. I love it and met great people too.
I wouldn't only because I wouldn't be at home to justify it? Would you?
Only person laughing to the bank is your landlord
I’ve been in Chicago for 10 years now and do think you can get a pretty nice 1BR for a tad lower but you can splurge for the experience and amenities of living in the city. I did it when I made a lot lower than you but was super frugal on food, commute, going out.
