Roll offs happen more often than people talk about. I was rolled off my first project b/c of the same thing. What did they expect me to do? Learn to code in one night? I was clear that I wasn’t a developer and was more functional when I joined the project.
No b/c I was clear at the beginning. They had people scripting, utilizing Hadoop and python on this project. I barely knewSQL and knew how to create charts in Tableau. Everyone on my project had years of Data Science experience/engineering. I think it would’ve reflected poorly if I had walked in there stating I knew these technologies when I didn’t. You can’t fake it to make it with a lot of technical skill sets with almost no technical background. I also talked to my manager before I rolled off and she gave me a good review as I tried to help out where I could and kept a positive attitude. Communicate at the beginning of your next project and kill it.
Did they want you to be a computer scientist? That’s not something you just pick up... from my point of view, it’s on them for not staffing correctly. If anyone is paying attention, they’ll see right away. What’s your background?
Thank you for admitting that the actual developer skill set is not something you just Google pick up. Lot of consulting firms don't get that. Can't be staffing people without CS/engineering degrees to dev heavy contracts saying they have "deep expertise" or SME status after three years
Since you are an associate, I’m gonna guess you’ll get a pass as long as people don’t hate you
In the future make sure there is a lead that can help coach you
Yeah I’ve seen people fired over that for sure. I would watch out. That Sr Manager that rolled you off is going to put in a bad review of you up to the partners. I would start looking external for another role asap. You Sr Manager sounds like a jerk. Create an ad on Craigslist using his work email and phone for a nice car for an cheap price.
What firm are you with?
Not likely unless you did something egregiously wrong. Don’t be latent while looking for a new project (reinvest, network, etc.) and you’ll be fine. Make sure to have a candid conversation with the project lead so you’re aligned on skill set before your next engagement. Don’t worry about it too much.
being on a tech project you need to do more than slide work or you’re just MC
