I have just a small data set, but I’ve cased probably 5 or 6 people who thought this was sufficient preparation and none of them made it past the first round. I’d strongly recommend finding someone to practice with if you can.
Agree with BCG1. Sure, there are people that are naturally good at it. But it’s not smart to assume you’re one of them.
I never practiced with anyone, but did go through a lot of cases myself (even saying my answers out loud).
And I’d argue that the McK folks here are perfect examples of selection bias. Think about all the people that tried that route and got rejected. From my experience with interviewing, they’d account for a large majority
BCG2 our interview cases are also quite a bit easier than yours (in my opinion)
At a very basic level, it’s easy to believe ours is a fairly demanding selection process for a highly selective role. And I’ve never seen any interview advice that didn’t start with “do live mocks.” Why wouldn’t you give yourself every advantage?
Personally, I’ve been an interviewer for us >100 times. The line between success and failure is quite thin. We’re trying to assess, in a 25 minute case, your structure of thought, analytic ability, willingness to take a stand in the face of ambiguity, and a whole bunch of other complex skills. It’s not hard to have some basic norm/rhythm missteps distract from that. Live prep builds muscle memory around those parts of the case so we can both focus on the important stuff
Agree with B2 (and I’d add survivor bias). There’s a graveyard of folks who didn’t prep and failed disastrously. (I’m at BCG).
I know we would give you a Consultant or Associate to mock with, so why not take advantage of it?
Didn’t prep with anyone. Did do some out loud. Probably depends on learning style
I’m same as M1 but didn’t do the out loud thing. Definitely possible
For bcg interviews I think it’s really difficult to succeed if you haven’t prepped with someone given how conversational they are. Other firms that may not be the case
Possible, but not likely. I did it that way, and got a BCG offer but pretty much flamed out of Bain and McKinsey
@P1 is the associate/consultant mock interview provided after you get an interview from the firm, or is there a way to do that before landing an interview
