Hacked-together systems with inadequate understanding of interdependencies and critical control points as root cause. Effects amplified by DL's outsize market position and low numbers of vacant seats on shrinking numbers of competitors.
Anything built after 2002 would, but without knowing how old that portion of deltas infrastructure is I can only guess... A lot of the older systems (as400, aix, winnt, hpux, etc) are ran on a prayer as there's a chance any restart would be lights out for good... Also most of the original developers of the one off apps have long since retired, so maybe it was one of those apps running on a server affected by the power outage that caused the failure?

Didn't they already say it was due to a power outage in Georgia?
CHINA IS HACKING AND TRYING TO TAKE OVER OUR GREAT AND PROSPEROUS NATION.
Hacked. They say it was a power outage, but I'm sure hackers were testing something.
Power outage story doesn't hold water
1. Georgia Southern has stated there was no outage
2. Any, in fact every, decent critical system has a redundant back up system in a different location.
One of the things that worked perfectly on 9/11, less than 8 seconds of data was lost
3. This could be a bad update by IBM, but the redundant system should have been able to counter that. Beau guess is it's piss poor IA systems and a malicious hack
