Hacked-together systems with inadequate understanding of interdependencies and critical control points as root cause. Effects amplified by DL's outsize market position and low numbers of vacant seats on shrinking numbers of competitors.
Anything built after 2002 would, but without knowing how old that portion of deltas infrastructure is I can only guess... A lot of the older systems (as400, aix, winnt, hpux, etc) are ran on a prayer as there's a chance any restart would be lights out for good... Also most of the original developers of the one off apps have long since retired, so maybe it was one of those apps running on a server affected by the power outage that caused the failure?

From what I know lot of airline business is done on old mainframes, as they are supposed to be fast and have less overhead. Maybe some problem there. Too less data to make an educated guess.

Power company is disputing the outage. Regardless, who knew old mainframes don't have hot-hot backups?
$100 says it wasn't the mainframe - it was the shitty servers they wrap around them to arbitrate access and put web interfaces on the core.
Their infrastructure has yuuge issues if everything above the mainframe layer isn't relatively modern with decent backup and restoration capabilities.
But what triggered it? Am assuming airlines have a backup for a backup. Hot-hot-hot mode. Everything real-time.
