Every company and situation is different, so what you think is needing "real change" might be a non-issue to others. The problem I see is that DEI was used by some companies to create change while in other companies it was a political tool to pander to loud voices - sometimes to the detriment of the business. The DEI phrase has been tarnished by the people that jumped on it as the flavor of the month, who are now on to a newer fad. They hurt the cause of people that really wanted to do something valuable.
Yes. Create more specificity by narrowing "DEI" to core business components. Selling to/supporting diverse customer segments. Empowering a workforce that reflects the diversity of the communities you operate in to have equitable accessibility to different career paths and professional opportunities. Ensuring your corporate citizenship functions can produce the community impacts that matter at both the specificity of small, diverse, undeserved communities, and the scale of the overall geography you serve.
What actual topics were on the agenda to discuss? I think saying, “today, we’re discussing DEI” is the wrong approach. You’ve got to tie the topic at hand with something members of the team can relate to and empathize with.
Be strategic in who moderates or facilitates that conversation and careful to not choose topics that can’t be boxed into the time allotted. Provide pre and post work if you want leaders to really think about whatever it is you are presenting.
Throwing DEI topics in the air for “sentiments” will always result in a waste of time. Every single time.
I will give a little different perspective. The main problem is that the whole DEI issue is US-centric. May be it is a solution to US social problems but the same template can't be applied or accepted anywhere else in the world People don't care about it but are just putting up with it cause they fear the consequences. Nobody will buy this DEI thing in Europe, China, Russia, India, or the Middle East.
