I once said "I don't answer dumb questions in an interview" and we moved on. Still got an offer. I didn't really care about the job so I wasnt worried about the repercussions.
All these responses are crazy. Pick an actual weakness and say how you’re working on improving (with specifics). The intent of the question is to test your maturity in answering questions like that.
Errr.... may be walk out of the room. Who asks such a cliche. Shows lack of thought and preparedness on part of the interviewer.
“Serial killing” ... then stare the interviewer down for a good 30 seconds.
M1, I misread your comment - thought you were suggesting that specific weakness as the answer. if I were interviewing I would interpret “I take on too much” as a fake weakness meant to make the interviewee look good (just saying the person works hard). When I say “actual weakness” I mean say something like “I don’t plan ahead enough”, “I tend to over complicate when explaining concepts”, etc.
Saying sometimes you work too hard or are too detail-oriented.
I’ve actually never been asked this in an interview. I’d almost say something that’s a minor weakness, like “I don’t always respond to emails as quickly as I like, but I always try to stay on top of my inbox.” Just for sheer diversity of response from what others might do with “name a weakness that’s actually a strength."
Several people I know on the “fast track” have been told they need to be better at work-life balance. So you could use that. Or need to know how to say NO if your plate is already full
It’s the same as a YE review. Just take your development areas and use that. Using the example above, “I’ve found I can take on too much when asked, as I get excited about the work and want to contribute. That said I’ve done x, y, z to continue to develop here as I know it’s unsustainable and over the long run doesn’t help as much as I’d like to think." Or something like that
BCG1 that’s exactly what I said except I gave an example from a previous comment...
BCG1 is spot on. It’s a maturity question.
Interesting. If someone explains basically anything to me as something that has been pointed out at a development area and then tells me steps they’re taking to fix it, that’s good enough for me. But then again, BCG is harder to land a gig than my firm 🤷🏻♂️
And I misread yours haha. I think we’re agreeing here
It's an easy behavioral, do what M1 & BCG said and point out a weakness and what you are doing to improve it.
You can be a bit cheeky and say something that is also a strength. For example when I was asked this I said that sometimes I don't communicate enough or as effectively as I think. For example on my project I lead xyz and first month I sent my manager periodic updates/notes when risks arise. I learned during our check in that they felt in the dark sometimes and would appreciate more frequent check-ins since they didn't really trust me yet. Changed my communication style and how often and I make sure to have a conversation with new managers before doing things for them
