Rising Star
2nd class citizenry.
Scut work.
Resume taint.
That said, if it's a good firm, I have seen it work out for associates if they don't stay too long. It can catapult you into a partner track associate position
My brother is an equity partner at a firm (not quite biglaw, but hundreds of attys) where he started out as a staff atty. It can be done. He's by far the exception.
Appreciate this. And yes, the second class type treatment is definitely a huge consideration/fear, but wondering if the work/life balance is worth it (if it truly exists in a non-partner track position). I’m totally on the fence here, but may just pass on it due to some hesitations.
Rising Star
Risk of being treated as a third class citizen (after partners and partner-track associates). Partners, to the extent they mentor anyone, are going to mentor partner-track associates because in theory they’re grooming them to succeed them, so partner-track associates will be leading the transactions, getting client face-time etc. As a non-partner track associate you may be just a warm body to do whatever overflow work is available.
It doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing. I’ve met people intentionally and happily on this track. They don’t want the stress of managing matters and clients. They are happy to just churn out some relatively easy billables, take their (lower) check, and spend more time with their family/friends.
