When you love the team you’re on and the culture with potential for mobility if you want it. It’s sort of the predicament I’m in - I’m 40k under market rate and looking for banks I might be willing to switch to if JPMC doesn’t want to counter.
I think a counteroffer is only good when money was the only issue. If you have a good boss, a good team, flexibility, and all that other stuff but you just wanted more money, I think it's worth staying. But if you were leaving because of toxicity or other factors, the money isn't going to change those. In fact, it could make it worse. Because now they know that you have one foot out the door.
Review benefits and vesting schedules (if RSUs are even worth anything). But it sounds like it depends on how much you trust the system at your current company to provide you mobility. There are always trade offs with having to learn a new tech stack at a new company, new team, new politics. If your current company matches the offer, I’d decide whether I really like the other company’s trajectory/mission/product more. But if you don’t see any realistic upward mobility at your current company (without having to bring offers from others), then stay a year with better pay to find an opportunity that you absolutely LOVE.
