Equity research is a horrible job, all writing and crafting models no one wants to look at. It is all about telling a story to convince people in a way you want, and you don't take responsibility when it goes wrong. Exits can be corp finance, fp&a... and not what you expected. Bonus depends on sales, but did the people who bought NVDA needed a write-up with full-fledged models? No. I would choose the industry director role any day. You will feel like you are doing more real work there, and you can work your way up to SD, ED & VP. (My spouse used to be in equity research, now in consulting and looking to exit to biopharma Director level as well)
You would have started as a portfolio manager on the buy side way before that. Sell side is definitely never as competitive as buy side, hence the lower pay as you can even see in this question. Why would you think it's easier to move up in a hedge fund than moving up from Director level in biopharma? You may not even be able to break in a hedge fund from the sell side.
Director in Pharma (check flair), it’s a sweet gig.
Growth is very variable depending on you and your situation. You could be stuck as a director for a decade, or you could get promoted every 2-3 years, I’ve seen both.
Glassdoor is pretty accurate.
I’m at the low end of director at 205k base, 23% bonus target (usually get over), and 50k RSU target (vest over 4). Some I’m at 265k my first year and will ramp up to ~300 without any raise.
