Trying to decide between offers, one is for a biopharma director role (base $230k, TC ~300k, 40hrs week) vs biotech equity research role (base $200k, no idea about bonus, 60-70 hrs minimum, ~100 during earnings, can likely aim for $400k TC in 3 years, or more if moving to buyside). Much more interested in equity research, and growth can be fast, but hours are rougher than pharma

Is it common to negotiate software engineer salary at smaller companies? I know it’s common at FAANG, but what about for companies with around 200 engineers? I have a counter offer from my current company and on-site interviews scheduled for end of July with google and Amazon, but I’d prefer to go with the smaller local company if I can negotiate the salary (from offer letter) up another 5% or so.

This might be the wrong place to ask but is getting a car worth it?

I think it’ll somewhat improve QOL but with parking, insurance, gas and financing costs I’m not sure spending almost 1K/month is a good idea at 22.

The other problem is that used cars are so damn expensive right now so I can’t just buy a used mx5 for 5-10K
