If you want to get out of tech consulting, you have 3 main options:
1. Work for the vendor
2. Work in industry - IT
3. Work in industry - business
For #1, you can find a role in a variety of areas with the vendor. You can still work on the tool on the product side of the business, or focus on things like partnerships or sales.
For #s 2 and 3, the easiest first step is to go to a company that uses a tool that you have experience implementing. You have some options here based on the maturity level of the org with that tool:
#2 - IT - you can work in a business analyst, tool owner, and/or program manager capacity to maintain and evolve the current tool. The work would feel similar to what you did in consulting except you would be in-house, and likely working on a blend of production support, small fixes/enhancements, and large-scale projects.
#3 - business - you can work on the business side, which would be people who would have traditionally been your business counterparts in tech implementations. These business functions are structured differently but some examples of work could be analytics, special projects, or system owner/admin. You probably won’t go into the back end that much if you go to the business side, but you would probably be articulating the requirements and strategy that IT responds to.
For #2 and #3, roles would change based on if a company has gone through a recent implementation or is planning on going through one. The most interesting work will be at a company doing one of these things, but you will be very busy. If you go to a company that’s more stable and looking for someone to support steady state, the work will be less interesting but WLB will be better.
From a level perspective, I think advanced senior con or manager is best for going to industry as far as having enough experience to be an expert at the new company and not being so senior that you’re priced out of industry roles. If you go to the vendor I think there’s a variety of ranges, but the focus will be less on you bringing an outside perspective and more about you being able to leverage your experience to onboard to their model quickly and fit into how they think about the tool.
