no one cares about a cover letter. just your book
Cover letters are not part of our industry. Breaking through email clutter with a creative subject line, bullseye.

I find building relationships adds more valuable to a job search than a cold outreach asking for a job.
When messaging CDs, try a bit of an ego boost method to get attention. I’d look for recent industry articles and see what work they’re talking about and proud of, if you like that work as well then mention you saw it and love the way they think. And how you would love to grab a coffee and pick their brain. Then go into your looking for internship pitch at coffee if they agree.
If they don’t have time for coffee, pass along your portfolio anyways and see if they’d be willing to book a review of your work a few weeks out. Never hurts to ask.
And try going to networking events, and industry talks to meet people and get your name out there. A lot of CDs don’t have time to build networks at schools anymore, so meeting them at these events will put you top of mind for the new classes of juniors.
Are they asking you for a cover letter?
then forget about it unless you write the most spectacular piece of writing you have ever written. And even then it doesn’t really matter….
Your book and if you gel well with the team, that’s it.

Literally never seen a cover letter. Hiring managers just send me portfolios.
