The one time I had a salary position, I worked more hours than ever. Calculating that up, even with bonuses, I was making less than when I was hourly. My sister said the exact same thing and she was in a different profession altogether. I always thought salary was the way to go, but too many employers take advantage of that.
I think it depends on the organization. I’m salaried, rarely work more than my 7-3 Monday-Friday. And if I do I can come in late or leave early
I currently work salary. I work more hours than ever and if I calculate it out I make less than I did only 3/12’s! I am suppose to be able to leave for appts ect. If I do that then it’s almost impossible to catch up. I usually eat my lunch while working at my desk.
I think it depends. I'm salary but...when I leave early for an appointment they don't take my PTO to cover that hour or two. I work my set hours 8-5. It's my own dern fault I don't take my lunch breaks like I should.
We don't get holiday pay really. We have to work 2 holidays each year...the ones we don't work we take PTO. Since nothing happens on a holiday we usually leave early and they adjust our pay down to the actual time worked. I feel like if I come I should get 1.5x pay for the whole day because the trade is when I'm off in having to use my PTO. You also can't elect to just work all the holidays either to save PTO because they won't staff up on holidays.
Pros:
- Greater flexibility with schedule
- Some weeks you work less than 40 hrs but get paid the same regardless
- Typically accrues PTO faster
- Greater (federal) protections from certain negative employment practices
- Typically associated with a ‘professional’ or managerial position
Cons:
- Some weeks you might work 70 hours but you only get paid for 40
- No overtime
- more professional responsibilities
Strangely, some positions where there are workforce shortages are considered salaried but they still get overtime. Example, CRNAs.
