Not sure if that was their intention, but it surely does leave a debtor class. I will be digging my way out for the rest of my life.
Same 😔
I think the big misconception they have given is a college degree=being able to pay it back.
I took 100k in student loans and make 100k as a chemical engineer. In 2 years I have paid 20% of my loans.
The issue is people spend that 100k and only make 60k. It becomes unpayable super fast and then people are in the so called debtor class.
Yeah, I spent close to the 100k and don't make six figures yet as a junior lawyer.
They steer people into income based programs, which have just added to their debt because it doesn't even cover the interest, which is then capitalized. Loans have ballooned since they started doing this. When I got my loans you had limited options: full payments or graduated payments that covered interest and, in the later years, principal. There was also an income based plan, but you apparently had to cover the interest. There were no forgiveness plans.
The government sanctioned corruption in the student loan industry makes the subprime mortgage industry look like amateurs.
Its not the loans so much the issue as the bad products of poor quality degrees being sold. I did tech school. In my economics class we had to justify the degree we were going for considering the cost it took to earn, the number of local employment opportunities, average income, and opportunity cost of not working full time while attending college. Bet the majority of Universities would be terrified have this is a first semester project.
