Ah yes, the old "self-choice for ownership" gimmick. That's code for "give them "choice" so the DO/county/state has zero accountability".
We use vocabulary.com, but teachers here usually pull vocab from every text. Latin and Greek roots, a LOT of rote learning for AP kids.
I mostly focus vocab on Greek and Latin roots, prefixes, suffixes, etc. I find that helps my students better interpret the meanings of words they don't know while reading.

Do you use that book from Prestwick House called Vocabulary from Greek and Latin?
I had a 9th grade teacher who did this with us. I already had a pretty good vocabulary, so I just picked words that I knew, but I also knew that at least half my classmates didn't know. So I looked like I was working and learning, when in fact I was completely screwing off. And nearly all my classmates did something similar. Even the ones who claimed they didn't know words like "tree."
I find the entire philosophy that students know better than trained adults 1. What they don't know, 2.
What they need to know, and 3. How to go about learning, it to be a ludicrous waste of time, and an actual detriment to real learning.
I do a mixture of several approaches: preloading vocabulary for literature using context clues from the text, Greek/Latin roots, ACT/college/work place vocabulary, and them choosing words from their choice reads. We do a lot of word usage like them writing sentences/paragraphs correctly using the word and adding context clues and small symbols that are connected to the definition to aid in retention.
I just found the coolest resource on TPT

What’s the name of it? I’m gathering resources so my department can decide how to improve vocabulary instruction. I think we’re going to use Quill for grammar. Have you used that?
Do your district have license for Flocabulary?
Coach
I bought a Flocabulary book maybe 10-12 years ago, but that program didn’t fit my students’ needs. I just looked at vocabulary.com and it looks promising, though my district usually says no to subscriptions for one school (they say it’s due to equity issues) and will say they can’t afford it for the whole district. Do your teachers just get subscriptions for their own students and ask for donations?
What about doodle notes for Greek/Latin roots? How about challenging them to use their vocabulary words in context in stories or informative reports? Example: graphic novel, climate fiction short story with a fact-background section at the end of the story. You could get lists from their science/math teachers.
Membean is an awesome self-paced program for 6th - 12th. You cannot create your own lists though if that’s what you are looking for in a program. The teacher dashboard gives detailed information and an individualized quiz can be given to the whole class with the click of one button. www.membean.com
