I was at $160k as an ACD in house 2021-2023 so I’m guessing $180-200k is in the CD ballpark? Just be prepared for layoffs every time corporate reorgs - which in my experience was about every 2 years (yes I was laid off, no hard feelings, great team and wlb)
In Chicago, no awards, brand new CD will be making 140-145. Depending on the agency and your experience AND awards you will top out at 175-180. There are a few exceptions like if you come from Wieden or have won a Grand Prix in Cannes, you might be able to get up to 200 but that is super rare. The big shops pay the most and the least I.e. FCB is known for underpaying while Burnett will overpay if you are an awards magnet. In house pays very well, but doesn’t care about awards. However places like Kraft are known for being right on par with agency pay grades. Hope this helps. To get over 200k, you must have a GCD/ECD title or have been at a shop for a very long time. Pharma pays better but is a very specialized skill set and you need a lot of experience in regulated markets to crack into those at a CD level.
This is the most accurate response
These days, I’d say you’re about 40-60k off.
Damn. I make less than this. Guess I need to start actively interviewing too.
How is a CD only making 210k it such an odd number that it’s like someone who was hired at 200K as an ACD and got a promotion with a nothing raise
Evoke is offering premium salaries and 100% remote work
I know our ACDs make 160k so I’d think thats about right. maybe 180k on the low end 240k on the high end approaching group or executive
Depends what ‘in house’ - PepsiCo offered me 170 for a cd gig a year back no equity - a ton of cos pay par or less to agency salaries. Coinbase on other hand is paying 190 base/ 20k bonus and 60k equity for acd…
I think context drives this. The industry blows right now so I would imagine it’s lower than it should be. And there’s fear of the economy. Our senior Art directors make around 110-130 and ACDs making in the 150 range. But I know GCDs that make 250k. It depends on the client. Does the client have money. Are you overseeing multiple accounts. Are you running it alone or with a partner. Is there a GCD or just an ECD. Depends on the state of the accounts you work on too, if they could potentially be going into repitching you could ask for more. Will you be doing any new biz. Does the account come from a bigger brand that you would be asked to pitch other brands from their portfolio. Also depends on the agency. There are a few agencies that are struggling to retain talent right now that don’t have any big brands that you could probably ask for more because it’s not glamorous.
