We had an Employee Benefits Roundtable Committee on this topic two years ago and managed to whittle the wish list down to five feasible options. Establish a daycare program for infants-to-3-yr-olds (CON: labor, supply, operating cost, liability insurance, state license requirements) Free lunch offerings in the cafeteria during established employee lunch breaks (basically soup, salad, sandwich, chips, a cookie or cake, soft drink/tea. Another pricetag item); Monthly employee awards, in three to five categories, with winners receiving $25 pre-paid Visa cards so they can be spent as the employee wishes, and not just to Walmart, Target, or Outback Steakhouse, etc.; Either allow employees to carry more than 5 PTO days into the next fiscal year or "buy" those days on Dec. 31, cash-in-hand. Right now it's a "use 'em or lose 'em" system, unless an employee was denied PTO due to critical staffing needs (pandemic, disaster, holidays draining too many employees, etc.; and fifth, mainly because the other 17 suggestions focused mainly on pay raises, performance bonuses, and other big-ticket costs, to give an employee $500 for any suggestion that improved efficiency in their department's policies and procedures. No. 5 was adopted by the directors and we have had three suggestions and no winners in two years. The PTO idea failed by one vote earlier this year, but that old fart is now in a nursing home, so it could be adoped in January. The monthly employee awards is being remodeled by a subcommittee, looking at 3 awards with $10 gift cards to a corner coffee/donut shop. The "Jewels in the Crown" items were praised for being forward thinking and employee-centered. That's Ivory Towerist for "We didn't tell them to have kids," and "they can bring a peanut butter sandwich from home with the money we pay them to do their job." Like they say, you'll never get a homerun just standing at the plate watching the balls whiz by. You've got to take your best swing.

I really think bang for the buck would be a facility sponsored daycare. Let it be for employees of the hospital only. The world has gotten crazy and sometimes doctors or nurses are targeted...keeping a daycare employee only limits access to a providers children. Allow payroll deduction for daycare fees. This facility should be near but not within the hospital. Extend benefits of education to those caring for our children so that they may find value in their job, feel appreciated, and stay on there or at the hospital when they've finished their education.
Having a one stop spot for children to be dropped off after school and cared for there until mom or dad gets off work would also be helpful.
If you want employee satisfaction help that employee manage the things they love and balance their home needs with work needs.
