It’s the inverse relationship to the amount of joy a person has in his/her life. All the people with utilization in the 40-50’s are happy because they don’t have that much work and don’t mind PA life, while people in the 90%+ range regret working in public accounting daily
Basically how much they can squeeze out of you in hour units
Billable hours/40 hour work week
Cumulative for a year

It’s ok. The issue would be if they gave you 40 hours but you only did 20 lol. Cuz then they’d wonder what you did the other 20 hours lol. As long as you’re proactive about finding work that’s not your fault, whether that’s reaching out to your team, scheduler, etc. I know plenty of people who had utilization in the 40’s and 50’s their staff 1 year (me included when I was a staff 1) and I didn’t have any issues because I reached out for work, but there just wasn’t any work to give to me. Depending on your service line, it may be easy or hard to find work. If you’re in audit and only on one engagement this busy season, all you can really do is reach out to them. If they don’t give you work, you should just chill. However, if you are at client site, I know most people bill their time no matter what, regardless of whether they do work. It’s not their fault they’re forced to be at client site
