Our billable requirement is 1850, which sounds nice, until you realize that patent prosecution is done on a fixed fee basis so the hours you can bill without hurting your efficiency are tight. Our bonus is gross salary decided by billable hours, times the number of hours over the requirement. So, say your hourly is $95, you would get $95x hours over 1850 as a bonus, and then taxed

What’s the best way to turn down a 2nd interview? During the 1st interview, I learned that the compensation for the role is not within the range that I am looking for and requires 400 more billable hours a year than what I bill now. I’d basically be laterally for my current salary just to bill 400 more hours. I also wasn’t aware that the local office was strictly ID. Firm website advertises lots of practice areas. Any advice? 2nd year junior attorney applying to new positions in the Southern California area. Every firm that’s called me to interview are smaller firms with salary ranges of 80-90k. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong — I have had multiple people review my resume, cover letters, etc. It seems like it’s a decently hot market, and I’m just out here getting frustrated.
