10YOE, Non-PHD (but I have a masters in statistics+applied math)
I have been hungry my whole career - I took jobs at great risk way outside of my comfort (and skill) level - been PIP/RIF'd/Fired.
I now lead a special projects team - we operate as management consultants picking up projects, laying out model strategy, sizing opportunities, quickly pivoting, absurdly ambiguous ways of working - and its a riot. Its also risky, and at times, frustrating - because it is not "safe" in the usual sense of "here is your work stream, here is your problem, and here is your timeline."
I have worked in damn near every industry, for brand names, startups, started startups, consultancies so large their websites dont (have to) work... It is all about applying yourself outside of your comfort level.
Seriously, have you considered applying for jobs above your comfort level? What stops you? If your current manager has double your experience, have you probed what they have learned? How they approach problem solving? Have you found a mentor? Do you have any DS friends that you can routinely chat with outside of your company? This assumes they have empathy - and many tech managers sorely lack that skill.
Seriously again, have you figured out what you want to work on? What you want to make your personal brand? What gets you excited?
Always happy to chat more - I realized I asked 9 follow up questions :D
You should ask your manager at your company and share your aspirations and ask on a potential timeline and what you need to do to get into a manager role. Otherwise I would start searching for other jobs.
There’s so much between simple code and slides and a PhD. Companies have analytics teams ranging from just automating stuff to full research. Figure out the complexity of work you want to do and then look through companies to see where you fit.
