I hate interviewy questions in interviews. I think if I was ever asked "what animal would you be?" Etc I would prob walk out at this point in my career. Interviews should discuss your experience and be a natural conversation to understand if it's the right fit for the company and position. Not interview questions like they ask on that new Interview tv show
some of the questions I like to ask:
* [at the end of the interview] - what is one question you were expecting that I didn’t ask (and then make them answer). shows who is prepared. it’s also interesting to see what part of their personality/skill set they gravitate to.
* last question - in 30 seconds or less, what do you want me to remember about you. (aka your elevator pitch)
“Tell me about a time that you made a mistake.” It’s actually incredible how many people respond with “you know, I can’t really think of a time when I made a mistake.”
I've been asked some winners. When I was once asked about my proficiency in Microsoft Office, alarm bells were ringing so loud I couldn't hear myself think.
I personally like to find out why/how people got into advertising, and what they consider to be their best work, and why - it's not a trick question with a right or wrong answer, but the response is often an indicator of how they mentally approach the job. Most interviewers will give you some version of that question, so it's worth thinking it through ahead of time.
Interestingly, what I consider to be someone's best work is fairly often not what they do. Had one AD come in with a great book, but his side illustration work was what blew me away. He was debating whether or not to include it. If it's cool or interesting, especially if it differentiates you from every other AD or CW, include it. I actually prefer to see a mixed bag-I like interesting, multi-faceted people with cool shit going on outside (or on the periphery) of advertising.
^trick question, there are no inferior mean girls quotes.
What's your favorite mean girls quote?
I was being interviewed by a friend/former coworker
What would your 3 best critics have to say about you? And what would your 3 worst? Really fucked me for a loop.
Simple one that i always ask: why do you want to leave your current job?
“Tell me one interesting fact about yourself.” That one gets me every time
"Do you like dogs" threw me
It was with Target. I was asked what I thought the Brand (personality/position) was, what I thought Target felt it was and what I thought customers felt it was.
It was pretty telling that he knew they were a little too in their own bubble. That was refreshing. It also threw me but made me think quick. He was fired, probably for questioning their way too much.
“If you were a super hero, what would be your super power and why.” I️ mean - seriously? That was followed by “what was your biggest fuck up” #1 you do not curse in an interview, grasshoppers and #2 the correct answer to that would be “sitting in this room right now” or “getting into advertising.” Period.
“Why would you want to work here?”
I convinced myself that I did and it’s been down hill ever since. Should have taken the question as a warning sign. I’ll have to skype next time to be able to read facial expressions. 😒
