ALSO ALSO. Read your contract carefully. If you quit or get fired within a certain number of years after they relocate you, you may be responsible for paying back the moving costs 😬
Chief
yes - standard is a year. ask for it to be pro-rated if you leave within a year.
also if you are let go they typically do not ask you to repay…only if you quit…
Chief
Depends how much they want you.
Very true!

I got $15K at the VP level for long distance moves.
And definitely check on the tax implications! The 2018 tax changes made most moving allowances taxable!! 😢
Chief
that was the change in 2018 [again, I’m not a tax pro ] - neither the employer nor the employee can deduct moving expenses so it’s taxable to the employee.
doesn’t matter if it’s lump sum or through a service.
generally agencies do lump sump unless you’re a senior level hire.
I got 10K, Chicago to LA. Find out if they have you go through a booking service (limits your moving options and money can’t go towards something like a security deposit), if they just give you a lump sum and you do with it what you will, or if they reimburse you on the back end.
Also. Moving is no longer tax deductible. Make sure to find out about ALL tax repercussions and if you will be expected to pay tax or if the new company will carry the full burden.
Super helpful, I really appreciate this! I hadn’t thought of tax repercussions. I definitely need to dig into that. The lump sum to do with it as you will seems like the easiest route—but that might be when taxes incur. I’ll look into this, thank you!
My first move (state to state) I got $5k. I had no idea what I was doing, and looking back I see now that the company took advantage of me. My latest move, I got somewhere around $18k (international) plus other incentives and my company helped me think through the details. Don’t get screwed.
I got $7,500 when i moved from London to NY (plus all visa and transport costs)
Very cool! What level were you when moving over to NY?
I was offered $6k at a mid-level position NY-CA.
Usually $10K for CD level.
I got $5k for moving from NYC to Detroit. But it was more like $3k after taxes.

Keep in mind it counts as taxable income. So you don’t get to keep all that.
Also, many places will just give you a moving “package” where they take care of everything for you — but that moving package has a taxable value. So be sure to ask for a spot bonus to cover the taxes.
It costs at least 10k for coast to coast. I did the same thing and initial cost was 9k but then the moving truck was delayed by two weeks because we got out on a very large semi trailer that was stopping in six different states before us. With a family of six, we had nothing to sleep on eat on, etc. It was the agency’s fault because we had to use their shippers. So they had to put us up for three weeks and pay for all meals. They gave us a per diem. In the end it cost them around 13k.
