Starting higher is always smart. Another tip is not to fill the silence during a negotiation. Getting nervous means moving your range down when you should have just waited and heard what the response is.

I think the best piece of advice I was ever given was not to be afraid to negotiate. In my first couple of jobs, I was too scared they would rescind the offer if I asked for more. Confidence has gotten me a lot of extra money in negotiations.

I always ask the recruiter for the salary range that they are looking for. Once they give it, I start giving them a salary I would be happy with. I also try to negotiate more stocks and PTO.
